£30 annual 'tax' for unlimited music downloads in biggest attack yet on internet pira
My post was to point out that technically they can see whatever you are doing , the legal issues are another thing entirely , but as I said I cant see the ISPs proactively looking for it , at the moment the record companies go to court with IP addresses to get names and addresses , if the new scenario just makes the ISP write the letter straight to the person cutting out the court , this way the ISP doesnt break any privacy laws , your IP address is freely available to the record companies the second you download torrents . If you say put yourself in their shoes to work out a strategy to cut down filesharing - just go for the easiest and biggest target - pick on the ones who arent tech savvy , it`ll end up with letters on the doormat . I would say the vast majority of people who use Bittorrent think that they are invisible on it - "the bloke down the pub told me to install this , go to this site and then start downloading scenario , theyll never catch you" and I would say imo that is the mass of people they are after to stop . Yup filesharing will carry on back underground in whatever form it goes to , be it private trackers , back to the newsgroups (a lot of the isps have the binaries groups banned) or the various programs around that allow encrypted vpns over the net and other methods already available of course . Public networks wont work for dloading on BT etc , as most of these will have already have those ports blocked ie they block all ports and only open specific ones like the ones for email , http etc , some wont , but after the firt letter you can bet they will have tied them down tighter than a ducks arse . Please dont think Im pro-record company , Im not , I just go about things to tell the whole truth , even if it makes uncomfortable reading , the final paragraph above says it all really , filesharing wont stop , it might even go back to the real old days of putting discs in the post (wtf is a letterbox ? lol) .

£30 annual 'tax' for unlimited music downloads in biggest attack yet on internet pira
What theyve said is that they will (firstly) target the heavy downloaders (imo of legal or illegal files) with general warning letters to "pack it in" , if it carried on then they would monitor what they are downloading . (I`ll pause here to say for those unaware , ISPs dont want heavy downloaders of anything , it costs them money , as they pay BT for bandwidth/data shifted) , their angle would be reducing their costs . .... from that point they can determine from the streams as to whether its music or video by data analysis and if they wanted , then read the headers of your data packets and find out exactly from where , they can determine straightaway from the protocols used as to whether its Limewire etc or Bittorrent , the very trackers that are used for Bittorrent will also give your IP Address out to anyone who joins the torrent . If you were looking at using a program to automate checking if a torrent was legal or illegal , just give the program the IP adresses of trackers that used by pirate sites to flag up certain users on the basis that its likely/quite likely its illegal and then to manually assess whats being downloaded (thats more an idea/concept of devils advocacy) . Playing the devils advocate again , I would say that the record companies will datamine torrents and automate the handing of this data to the ISPs to take further action . To answer the above posts point , no one knows at the moment as to whether it will be driven by the record companies giving data or the ISPs being proactively looking for naughty people (my above opinion shows what I think on it) , if the companies are driving it and you are only sharing legal files or watching the iPlayer all the time - the protocols will tell them the latter , and analysing the data will check out the former point . Of course , as you mention , data protection is a `hurdle` here . You can read between the lines if you wish on how to avoid a letter from the above points . The above is to inform thats all , Im not here to argue any point of view , just give the technical facts , other peoples business is their own concern imo . If anyone has ever used packet sniffers on their own data going into/out of their pc , you`ll know it has a lot of info in it as well as the ISPs currently holding the data on every single webpage you have visited and your ip adresses for a year as I recall (uk) . This appears to be the framwork of the meetings held to make the headlines -> http://www.isp-content-regulation.com/conference.agenda.asp

Help with Sony Walkman Video
No , for me personally - for the point above for myself ..........................is not rtfm either :embarassed:. In the context of "program x wont do this , why not?" , I would say not reading the manual or helpfiles is the main issue and agreeing with your first post of people should take to searching the internet first before asking , the context of "my pc is busted" is a different scenario , mine gets into this state mostly because windows has suicidal tendencies , dodgy software ? nah , I only run a few programs , Quakewars , VegasVideo , Reaper , Photoshop Elements and some program called iTunes :laugh3: .

ebay
It works in conjunction with the feedback and paypal required ...............as it says above , theyre only after higher price goods , Ive sold about a dozen or so (higher price) items and not had one issue . The scam with sending extra money and you send them money back should also be stopped . I`m not saying it covers everything , but anything it stops or reduces is welcome . As loath as I am to say it , Ebay is correct that it gives you a higher degree of safety . You can adjust the amount of feedback that a bidder is required to have to make a bid , or put in a note to contact you by email if outside of it . Obviously it wont stop them messaging you , but I would suspect the fact that they cant bid would make them find another auction where they can .

Help with Sony Walkman Video
....................apart from price of course :) and being tied to the resource stealing iTunes . I have the NWZ 8gig model , a snip at £70 , kicks the ipod in its nuts , then in the head and finishes in the nuts twice more . Most problems are caused by not RTFM , all of my computer problems have been solved via google and er.. having a spare pc to ask :laugh3:.....we wont say anything about how they were caused of course :wink3:

ebay
Its tucked away in the Ebay account settings - you can stop people living outside the UK from even being able to bid on your auctions , and set the amount of feedback a person must have before they can bid as well or that they must have a paypal account to bid . Obviously Ebay does its best to try to persuade you to not to put conditions on your auctions by saying you`ll get more for it and more exposure but quite candidly its rather like a turkey trying to convince you that XMas is a bad idea . My account is setup to only sell in the UK , to people with at least one good feedback and for any big items I sell I make it that they must have a Paypal account and pay through that . The one good feedback thing is for a timewasting thing Ive seen where someone opens an account , bids and wins on the big cost item and then closes their account leaving you with the pain in the arse of going through the hassle of getting the fees back and readvertising it - Im sure there is an angle for a scam on it somewhere but cant quite see it other than repeated doing of it might make the seller look dodgy and make people shy away from bidding on it - leaving the person to swoop in and get the item cheap ( My Mrs was going to sell her camera and was looking at others being sold and noticed one chap selling the same camera again and again over the period of a week or so , going into the details you could see the above happened ) . The caveat of above is to look at peoples feedback in detail , Ive seen a few buying mobile cards for a pound a piece and racking up feedback off them .

Ripping videos from BBC website
I`ll add another piece of advice I was given the other day about them concerning downloading this type of video , in the context of downloading with Orbit Start Orbit within Orbit start Grab++ Press play on the video you want in the Grab++ screen it`ll come up with an entry defined as an FLV , tick its box and click Download ***Let the download finish before you stop the video playing in its window The last step is apparently important .

Ripping videos from BBC website
Those videos are the latest(ish) attempt to stop ripping , they are in FLV format playing through a RTMP protocol , recording streaming video off your video card will also capture glitches as well but for keeping to watch later screen capture programs are the easiest way to go . If you wish to download the videos - use Orbit Downloader , its freeware - read the instructions , I tried it on one of the Wimbledon videos and it worked fine , for some reason though my PC has got its codecs or associations in a tizzy , I had to rename the suffix from .flv to .wmv to make it play (although its a flv file) .

Mp4 converter program ??
I use DbPoweramp , it has a trial period to convert to its MP3 encoder but you just add the other MP3 encoder to it (from the codec add-ons) , the reason I use it is that it adds a context menu to your right mouse button ie just select and right click to convert .

My Computer..... Nooooo!!!!!
My generic advice for computer help is to suggest typing the symptons into google along with the word "help" . I`ve solved most of my problems like this , google should find more computer problem oriented websites/forums . It might something as simple as overheating caused by fluff in the blower fan right up to a knackered laptop . The range of issues it could be stops me from giving any specific advice , try the google thing .

Heroes Season 1
No , its currently being filmed afaik , Ive heard some spoilers about it , there will be more Heroes brought in for parts of a story arc and ..... (the rest of this is real spoiler stuff so I won`t post it here) . The only bit I`ll say is that they are making a spinoff show called "Heroes:Origins" as well . Heroes Series 2 starts showing in the US September 24th .

Online video ripping
Had a look the CNN site , my previous notes are the old school of getting anything . For CNN I`d use Firefox and use the plugin DownloadHelper , CNN uses flash video , depending on implementation it can sometimes be found in the cache , but to be honest I wouldn`t bother when Firefox and that plugin means you just select what flash videos to download on the page you are on - no mincing about at all . However you get the videos , you will also require a flash video player to play them as seperate files (use Google for one) . URLS - for above www.firefox.com https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006

Online video ripping
If a screen capture video is acceptable the program Fraps is an option (although it costs money) , no idea if a freeware alternative is available . But you`ll need to find the correct URL for the stream if you wish to save the original streamed video for this (unless its a microsoft media in which case , it`s right click and select Properties to get its URL) . The URL will start with MMS: or RTPS: (these are the streaming servers) . Once you have the URL , get NET TRANSPORT to download the stream (look for V1.87 as its a non time limited version). To get proper URL - packet sniffer software required -> SnoopURL To download the stream -> Net Transport v1.87 or To video screen capture the video -> Fraps or other alternatives www.videohelp.com for help You`ll need to Google for these programs , and also probably for guides to use them , once you learn how to do it once , its easy peasy lemon squeasy ;)

Laptop Sound Cards?
Soundcards are like anything else , depending on your personal experiences , that can flavour your opinion on everything they make - Ive had 4 Creative soundcards and they`ve all behaved perfectly - they are not an audiophiles choice , they are made to be "jack of all trades" soundcards , with a cheaper pricepoint (uk anyway) . Sorry didnt realise you werent UK based , the only other thing that is made are USB Line Inputs , all I know is that they exist , no idea if they are comparably cheaper or anything else .
