"Indie" has lost its original, more technical meaning which you mention here. It no longer means "signed to an independent label" necessarily though it might still indicate that. More importantly, "Indie Rock" has now become a stylistic marker. It usually refers to what is also known as "Art Rock", though the meaning is kind of vague to me. It does seem to get thrown around without being defined.
