Ok, reviewed mine.....
- Sounds like a Janet Jackson or Beyonce type; I know it's not either of them (especially seeing as I saw the artwork briefly) but it's that sort of stuff and not my cup of tea at all. I really don't like this r'n'b sound but gave it one complete listen to give it a chance, but then skipped it on subsequent listens. Don't like, sorry
- Interesting beginning, more my kind of thing. I spotted the artist name on this one which was interesting cos I've seen their name before but not heard the music, possibly been guilty of dismissing them as a teenage band. Quite like this one, a bit of a grower. Would be keen to hear more of this band :-)
- Nice start, interesting. Hmmmm strange vocal, kinda squeaky, almost shrieky in places. Not sure on this one, it's not bad, but not great either. The quirky girly vocal lets it down imo, nice lyrics tho.
- Another female vocal, more normal sounding voice now. Mellower than previous one. Nice track, lovely instrumentation in places, quite pleasant.
- This is nice, very electronic but soothing. Instrumental. Sounds Radiohead-like. Went on too long tho
- Another r'n'b type. Really cheesy. ("Oooh, shit, damn, so good, so good") is that really what they are singing? It's dreadful - sorry :-(
- Another strange vocal. Can't tell if they're singing in English or not. Sounds bit like Ellie Goulding (but it's not) Quite good, might be tempted to hear more.
- These two tracks go well together, nice flow. Is it the same artist? I'm not so keen on this one. Don't like that strange rap type bit. Or the music for that matter, sounds like a badly distorted Miike Snow track. :-\
- hahaha Two Weeks - Grizzly Bear (I've been guilty of slagging these off before now!) I actually quite like this track, I heard it on radio months and months ago but then heard the rest of the album and was disappointed (thought it dull & not worthy of all the hype) A welcome inclusion here tho. Gotta admit it's the best track on the mix so far.
- Another poppy, r'n'b type girl singer(s), sounds like the Sugarbabes or something similar. Is the swearing and the rap supposed to make them sound big n' clever. This is a throwaway song, pretty meaningless & immature. Sorry to be harsh :-(
- Rather poppy again, kinda like an old school American pretty boy, boy band in places. Strange track, can't figure out what genre to place this. Are they talking French there, at the end..?
- Strange instrumental, nice piano. Soothing...could do without the strange noise that sounds like someone dragging a bag of sand tho :-\
- Another r'n'b type. More 'shit' lyrics, sorry I couldn't help it...what's with the inclusion of that word in these songs..? ("She rockin' that shit right") I mean, wtf is that supposed to mean??? Sorry, I must be too old for this kind of stuff. And I instantly object to any song that uses the term 'shorty' in it....women ain't shorties!
- Rather like this one...hard-core dance-y stuff, fast paced. It needs some dirty guitars and a gravel-ey voice over the top of it tho.
- Another Janet Jackson type. tbh, bit boring.
- I'm sure I've heard this before, but can't think when/where/who...it's not bad. Rockier than some of the other tracks, which is a good thing. Another female vocal, but not so quirky and not so mainstream this time.
- This is more like it, lovely guitar background, sounds Brit-pop-like. Almost like a more intelligent Oasis track, the singer's from Manchester right? Kinda slow, but I get the feel this band might have some better songs up their sleeves. This is the most promising track so far.
- Hmmmmm this is pretty interesting too. Nice strings, very upbeat. Sexy voice. Funny lyrics about a big, fucking mountain ;) haha. Like this one.
- Quite good, the end of this tape is redeeming itself. Kinda rocky, nice strings. Deep vocal, kind of 80's-ish. This one (and #17) got my foot tapping.
- OMG! Is this some sort of Hindu/Reggae-rap-crossover or something....very bizarre! On the other hand the music is very good. Take the vocals off and this'd be perfect.
My god, this was loooong. Lots of female vocalists, some quite quirky sounding, some quite mainstream. The tape improved considerably towards the end, cos that was more my sort of thing. Sorry, if I was a bit vocal in my disdain for some of the tracks, but I ain't gonna lie to you and tell you it was awesome...I'm not disappointed, the whole point of this is to open yourself up to different artists and genres, which I've definately done here. If nothing else, it confirmed that I really don't like r'n'b music LOL. btw There was a lot of artist names and artworks that kept popping up but I tried really hard not put names to tracks and ended up overwriting all the info, setting everything to Mixtape 5 in the tag editor to get rid of it all.
Highlights were #17, #2, #18 & #19. And I've concluded that the person that made this is quite young, female and possibly might be French ;) Merci...
