  1. Hey, thanks for the notes! Could someone post the chords though? I'm just beginning to play the piano, and I'm far from able to distinguish between chords... although I'd really like to play this little song!
  2. I think it's pretty good actually - Both the guitar and the singing! I don't know if the lyrics are correct, but it sounds pretty close to the original live version. I know it's not the kind of constructive criticism you were looking for, so sorry for that :p Um, I feel like I'm taking advantage here but could you post which chords you used? I really like this song, and I'd like to play it, but I haven't been playing guitar long enough to be able to learn by ear. Thanks for any help!
  3. That's very interesting to say the least, but I think we should wait for a more official kind of source - this guy's probably more interested in selling tickets than anything else. Coldplay5836, you can find download links in the thread in the multimedia section of this forum.

Nice catch! All this talking about tranmissions, media, Chris wanting to do what he wants and not what others want him to do... is it normal that it really reminds me of U2's Achtung Baby and especially the corresponding, subsequent ZooTV tour? Edit: from Wikipedia's article on the ZooTv tour: the Zoo TV stage was a complex setup, designed to instill "sensory overload" in its audience. The set's giant video screens showed not only close-ups of the band members performing, but also pre-recorded video, live television transmissions (intercepted by a satellite the group brought on tour), and text phrases. Electronic, tabloid-style headlines ran on scrawls at the ends of the stage. The band's embracing of such technology was meant as a radical departure in form, and as a commentary on the pervasive nature of technology. This led many critics to describe the show as "ironic". That's what I'm sort of being reminded of... Obviously Coldplay can't copy U2 and do a ZooTv 2, but, perhaps with Eno's influence, I think the next Coldplay tour is gonna be a "tour de force".

If you mean effects like fireworks, well, besides the fireworks there was also: - The big balls that used to be launched during Yellow are back too: they came during Lost! on saturday, and this time they're red, blue and yellow. - The confetti that used to be launched during Lovers in Japan appeared during In My Place, and seem to be multicolor "M" and "X" (but I'm not sure). - And of course the almost obligatory video on the screen (like the walking/running/flying man during HLH) and lights (lasers!) show. Do try to download the video from the thread in the multimedia section or at least take a look on Youtube. I thought it was a really great live performance.

Violet Hill maybe? It's got a certain "protest" vibe going - mainly anti-war with: "I don't want to be a soldier, who the captain of some sinking ship would stow far below" "And if you love me, why did you let me go?" here's also: "It was a long and dark december when the banks became cathedrals and a fox became God" - some (myself included) see that last line as a stab against the Fox Network, a pretty right-winged, conservative channel in the US. China banned the album Parachutes because of Spies, which the band thought was weird. Depends on your interpretation of the song. In any case, political or social-themed songs aren't really what they're known for. Edit: I'm not sure I agree, but some say Twisted Logic has a certain environmental theme to it, because of how humans are destroying the Earth. "Tonight, rivers will run dry, not for the first time, rivers will run..." "Hundreds of years in the future, there could be computers, looking for life on Earth". "Don't fight for the wrong side, say what you feel like". "Created, then drilled and invaded. If somebody made it, someone will mess it up. You are not wrong to ask who does this belong to, it belongs to all of us..." It does seem to have somewhat of a liberal, ecological, we-need-more-regulations message. In the end it depends on your interpretation of the songs.
  7. I agree about the new stuff - it's all brilliant, and there can't be enough praise for Coldplay from me! They've lightened and brightened my weekend, the upcoming week, the upcoming summer, and the LP5-era band is going to be part of what made 2011 and the upcoming years a really good time to be living and a coldplay fan! I'd like there to be a special mention for the old songs as well though - GPASUYF especially, since it is just... wow!! It was one of the best performances of that song - along with the one from Live 2003. And even though the techno mix with Talk during the Viva tour was nice and a change of pace/style, playing it this way is much, much better in my opinion! And bringing back Life is for Living was an excellent choice as well! It seems to me that, strangely enough, the reason why those old songs were really fun to watch is thanks to the other members of the band - and special mention for Jonny. If Chris became a rock star pretty early, Jonny seems to be "exteriorising" himself more and more - and this really struck me during GPASUYF (at the end when he's right up against the amps - woot!) LP5-era Jonny is awesome! A wonderful show all around - the new songs, the old songs, the band. The future's looking bright - or as somebody much more famous than me put it recently: "Heaven is in sight" Reading what I just wrote, it sounds ridiculously over-enthusiastic. But that's just how I'm feeling right now - thanks to Coldplay.
  8. It does sound pretty good! Thanks!

Wow, ColdplayingfromKansas, that's one heck of an interpretation! Which I agree with. I do think he's saying crocodile and not clocks - his pronunciation makes it sound much more like "croc" instead of "clock"... But who knows? It couldn't be much else in any case. After your explanation I feel like a bit of a dunce saying this, but here goes anyway... Mainly keeping in mind the fact that Chris is a father, to me the inspiration for apparently the majority of lyrics to this song are from that point of view: a father talking to his growing children, telling them that they should be careful, but also that the father will be there watching them, trying to keep them safe. This idea doesn't necessarily explain all the lyrics. And it doesn't necessarily go with the themes of OCD, addiction, and escape - but it does fit pretty well with love I think :) I'm not saying that's the "story" this song is telling. It just seems to me that that's the sort of thing that a parent could tell his children... And thus be the inspiration to a songwriter for a song. I could go on, but I feel like I've been enough of a dunce for tonight :) In any case, it's a great song, and having listened to it at least half a dozen times I can't get the "Oooh oooh ooooh" bits out of my head (which isn't necessarily a bad thing ;) )
  10. If Coldplay decided to release this as a single, then they can't think this is a bad track. If they don't think it's a bad track, it logically should be going to be on their next album. In any case, it's their choice. And we have the marvelous right to choose whether to buy an album with ETIAW on it. After that, if we buy the album, we have the even greater choice of listening to this track or to skip it. For me the choice is already made. But I'm not talking about it in half a dozen different threads... Despite how much I want to show my enthusiasm for this song, the album, the festivals and especially this band :p Edit: None of the other closing songs were released as singles. So I doubt ETIAW is the closer. Could be the one opening though - LiTII for example was a single, came in first for both the album (albeit in a reduced form) and the EP, and was the song with which they closed most (if not all the) shows on the Viva tour. We'll just have to wait and see when the album comes - because until then, nothing is certain.
  11. Since it's been released, I've listened to Live 2003 a couple of times, Rock Am Ring live yesterday evening and ETIAW - in other words, I've listened to ETIAW probably more times than would be recommended, but I still love it! I don't think I'llever set my virtual foot in the negative ETIAW thread! Compared to some of the older songs, I think ETIAW stands proud in the Coldplay catalogue... To me there's real passion, and happiness for life that inspires this track, which makes it really enjoyable. I think the track could do without the bit that was sampled... But it goes well with the track, it doesn't remove anything from it. If Chris wrote ETIAW or was inspired to write after hearing the original song, it makes some sense to include the sampling. That said, I'd like to hear an official version without it. I'm watching the Rock am Ring concert again (it took me 6 hours to download!) and I'm definitely looking forward to Every Teardrop is a Waterfall!!
  12. As I thought, ETIAW really works live... The rest of the show was really awesome too!!
  13. I was one of the first to rate this a "10" and now, something like 9 hours later, having listened to it nearly continuously since it came out, I've got to say... I'm still not bored with it! The music just radiates some kind of happiness that, when Will's doing the last drum bit, I just have to go through the track again :p It's possible that what I needed right now was this kind of song, and I have to say I'm much happier today than I was yesterday... thanks to this song I'll say! I said before that the music was great - borrowing (not stealing) part of the music from another artist is the least of my cares, to be honest, because the end result is very enjoyable... And that guitar riff, even if it sounds like Strawberry Swing played legato, is just really nice - I'm just waiting for someone to tab it so I can try playing it! For the people who say this is "R&B/techno/pop crap", I'll just say that it's unlikely we'd find either that drum bit at the end or that guitar riff in any modern release in those genres. Or even a guitar in the background. The lyrics, I did say before, aren't wonderful... They're kind of starting to make some sense to me, meaning that they don't sound as random as they first did. What can be commended here is that there's an unconventionnal structure here (since there's no real verse/chorus). And speaking of lyrics, these may seem to be a bit of a shambles, but look at Fix You: "Tears stream down your face and aaaahhh" - come on! You could even look at Yellow: "and it was all yellow"... These lyrics aren't great, but they're very fun to sing (to try to at least :p ) because, for me, the vocal melody is really fun. This track will do great live, I'm sure of that! But what I wanted to say here is that we shouldn't always expect genius from bands, both lyrically and melodically. ETIAW to me was more than good enough, which is why I rated it "10". When I listened to it, I tried to not compare it to any other song, to just rate it on its own - I spent those four minutes just staring at the screen, with no knowledge of the lyrics. And on its own, I found it brilliant. 8 hours later, I'd probably give it a 9,5 (which rounds up to 10 :p ) It's not always possible to hold songs to a higher standard - if that's what we did, then there are precious few songs these days that would be brilliant. This song is no Amsterdam, it's no See You Soon, it's far from Yellow as well; it's not like their other songs, and it shoudln't be compared to those songs I think... And we can't always expect the same kind of thing, because that would be boring. Parachutes was nice, it's got a warm feeling to it; this song has a very happy feeling to it - and I'll be more than satisfied if the album has the same kind of feeling. This song is modern music, pop-ish music, the Coldplay way. And by the way, compare In my place to Amsterdam or even to AROBTTH. I don't think those last two songs could be expected after listening just to In my place... So wait for the album, which some people think won't even have ETIAW on it. I don't care, because when the album comes out, I'll be listening to it avidly. My two cents... With music, it's impossible for everyone to like the same thing. That's a shame, because right now, I'm really happy thanks to ETIAW. I only wish more people were happy too. And in closing... Someone compared this to U2's Discotheque (although it's much better to me than that). Let's then remember that after U2's Pop, there was All that you can't leave behind and HTDAAB. So even if this album isn't as great as the previous ones, the live shows probably will keep being wonderful, and the next albums might be better. Addendum: I tried posting this an hour ago and it didn't work. In the meantime, I've got a couple of comments for the new posts: - kudos Technicolor Sparks! I agree with you. If Coldplay decided to release this as a lead single, they must have liked it. And if they like it, then we can't really be angry at them for releasing it to us... - when Chris said : "if you think the new stuff is shit, listen to the old stuff"... when did he say it? 'Cos it sounds like a potentially self-deprecating remark like he relatively often does. In that case, it means the old stuff is worse, so...
  14. Same here HandyAndy! I really like this song, and I've now got a great feeling about this new "era" Coldplay is entering: the festivals, the album, the tour... :D I don't know where to put this, so i'll put it here - here's my mini-review, which I wrote just because I'm so enthusiastic about this track: This song is absolutely wonderful! The intro which really shows a techno/electro/dance-ish "vibe" (that goes on during the rest of the song) really was not what I expected at all! But it works pretty well, and that guitar riff is just... magnificent! It seems to be a mix of a number of styles - there's a definite irish vibe with that guitar riff, but also something modern which can be heard at the start... But in the background I can kind of hear an "atmospheric" type sound - I can't describe it well, but it's like the start of Violet Hill. In any case, it's wonderful music! Sure, the lyrics are far from poetry, but the vocal melody is really nice (notably that "it's a wa-wa-waterfall bit, which I agree with somebody who posted somewhere isn't lyrical genius, but quite melodic). I can really see this song being a highlight in any concert - wherever it is in the setlist (start, middle or finish). Also, even if it's four minutes, which should be long enough by any standard, when that final drum bit comes signaling the end, I just don't want it to stop!
  15. Okay... not having had any reply in the last week or so, I'll ask a related question: how does one go about creating a midi file?
  16. Yeah, I'm talking about this one: http://www.4shared.com/dir/8921731/93e474f9/Coldplay_Sheet_Music.html I've used it only to download the MIDI files, which, as far as I can hear, corresponds exactly to the piano and vocals sections of the official sheet music books. This mainly enables me to listen to what the sheet music is supposed to sound like, and then compare to what I manage to play on the piano. Since I'm also trying to sing, it also gives me an idea of what the piece overall is supposed to sound like. Unfortunately, even though that link boasts an impressive number of midi files from the albums and some b-sides, it's not quite complete. It's mainly missing: From Parachutes: - Spies From AROBTTH: - Green Eyes - Warning Sign From Viva: - Life in Technicolor - Lost! - 42 - Yes - Viva la Vida - Violet Hill - Strawberry Swing From Prospekt's March: The midi files already included are just demos (about 30 seconds of each song). Which means it's basically missing the entirety of Prospekt's March. There are also some b-sides, but it's missing, for example: - Death Will Never Conquer (with the Viva la Vida single) - Lost? (with Lost!) - The Goldrush So, I was kind of hoping that some of the members here might have the missing midi files, and if that wasn't the case, that somebody could make them. I don't know how, but what I can say is that the result is what the sheet music shows for vocals and piano. In any case, I'm interested in some songs more than others: - Spies - 42 - Viva la Vida - Violet Hill - Strawberry Swing - Life in Technicolor II - Glass of Water - Rainy Day - Prospekt's March/Poppyfields - Now My Feet Won't Touch the Ground - Death Will Never Conquer - Lost? Thanks for any help!
  17. Thanks! This sure is a nice forum! Of course, as some have said, having a song performed on the show would be a good promotional boost. So... In the end, it depends on how the song is performed.
  18. Ah shame... I just watched the first episode, and the part where they did Imagine in a later episode... I'll probably watch just the sequence with the Coldplay song, because, you know, Coldplay rules, but it'll probably just comfort me in my decision to not watch the show. I'm not really against the show, it's a very nice idea, which deserves to be aired, but... The way it's been done just makes me shiver. There doesn't seem, to me who only saw the first episode, any type of strong motivation for me to be rooting for the characters. Finn's the only one who could be interesting, but he's not the main center of interest (apparently...) and having only one character like that is not enough incentive for me to go on. As far as the actual music goes, it was pretty decent - Rachel's got an incredible voice, but sadly her character's personality is sorely lacking in humility (the one who'll do anything to go ahead? Stop the stereotypes, please! Speaking of stereotypes: the black girl, a korean girl, a handicaped person and a gay kid seems a little bit too much like affirmative action AKA positive discrimination...). The signature song, Journey, was well interpreted, but it seems to me that Rachel's voice was a bit... overwhelming compared to the other characters. Sure, it goes with her character (as somebody who sees herself as somewhat superior), but since I don't like her character, meh. What annoyed me the most was with Imagine, John Lennon's masterpiece, and one of my favorite songs. I only saw the song being performed, I didn't see the episode, so I can't say much about it, but a number of problems seemed to appear: - a deaf choir? I've nothing against deaf people, but I'd never heard of deaf choirs before (so I was a bit surprised...). The idea is a good one - I think sign language is nice - but... - with a lead who can somewhat "sing" sure seems like a nice idea, but the overall performance, in my opinion, was weakened (I cringed halfway through)... - And what bothered me the most was that, well, the New Directions folk seemed to usurp the performance. Looking over these problems, they don't seem to be huge, but I still didn't like the performance, as much as I love the song itself. In other words, I shudder at what they might do to any of Coldplay's songs... But, if they manage to get to the same level as the material used - that is to say, if they manage to do something wonderful - then I'll definitely tip my hat off to them, and not badmouth the show anymore. My 2 or 3 cents...
