Major Minus

[ame= ] [/ame] I noticed some weird noises beginning at 2:49. For me it sounds like Ambulance or Police with the Sirens or somekind of screaming. So the "Aliens" land on the Earth and already wreak havoc. And the Lyrics "You could hear them climbing the stairs got my right side fighting while my left hides under the chairs" As if some "Aliens" found him/them in his/their House and he tries to Fight them or Hides himself. (Cant really tell what exactly hes doing)

Forget about the odd vocal effect for a second (which I don't love, but can appreciate). This is the edginess that a coldplay song just has never had. It is uptempo and really has some teeth. I can't ever remember hearing a song that had the real darkness and power of a Muse or a radiohead song like Bodysnatchers, but this is it. The guitar work here is amazing, and the bass work is as good as I have heard out of Coldplay. This is a fantastic song. They really have that Radiohead sound right now, but in their own unique way.

So I'm wondering, since we seem to think this is going to be the title track and everything: What does "Major Minus" mean as a title? Am I missing something here? It sounds kind of like a constellation of some kind, and that's what I think of when I hear it. But seeing their jackets that said "Major Minus Media..." I don't know. Any thoughts? It makes no sense to me and it's been driving me up a wall! :shocked2:

...and not even regarded in the same light as all the other songs? it's clearly the truest Coldplay song of this era along with Moving to Mars but it seems no one cares about it!! honestly as much as i hate para-para and wa-wa i think MM is fantabulistic!! it just reminds me of their older stuff which is what i want really but also i reckon along with Moving to Mars they're two genius tracks which made me not lose my hope on the band

It would seem that many people (more than I would have ever expected) on these boards do not understand this line and think it to be poor lyrics because they do not get the reference. I managed to add the guitar riff that Jonny plays after the 1st chorus in the studio version so it sounds like Rock am Ring. I'm gonna attempt to put it on YouTube but before I file for fair use, is there anyone who would want to listen to it?

On an interview Chris said that Will is the main vocals on Major Minus? Is this true? It sounds a lot like Chris.

I listened to the studio version for the first time after kind of hating it, and I've discovered...it sounds...just right. Fancy that. Anyone else revisiting this song and enjoying it? Still hating the vocals?

You decide for yourself, but I'm pretty convinced that the little guitar riff Johnny plays between verses (live version) after things get quiet, was taken from the song Beautiful by Snoop Dogg ft. Pharrel. Listen to the following, and forward it to 3:53, and you be the judge. Notice the melody in question, "Oh I, oh I, oh I, oh I" is sang 4 times in Snoop's song, and in Major Minus it is played 4 times on Johnny's guitar, and then played another 4 times right before Johnny's big, awesome solo. Ok, this might sound odd, but I'm convinced I'm right. The first time I heard the studio version of Major Minus, it seemed very obvious to me that the vocal effect on Chris's (and Will's?) voice on this song was meant to replicate one's voice over a telephone. Think about it. The narrator is calling someone up to warn them that "they" are watching him/her. Personally, I am of the opinion that Major Minus is not about the media, I think it's more in the vein of the unreleased songs Charlie Brown and Hurts Like Heaven in that it fits into this theme of literal rebellion (graffiti, riots). Someone's already probably mentioned this, but if you check on Spotify, it lists Major Minus and Every Teardrop as having single and album versions. I thought those that hadn't seen would appreciate this, given the dislike of the vocal effects on MM.

i think out of all the new stuff we've heard so far, Major Minus is the best track by a MILEEEE. and it totally reminds me of AROBTTH. but today they announced the song will be a B-side to ETIAW when its released on 26th June.:confused: this news has certainly made me depressed. i cannot believe such a brilliant song is considered a B-side. what do you guys think then? will it even have a slight chance of being on the album. :cry:

Im sorry if I missed the answer to this question somewhere along the way (i really do try to look before i post) but I have been wondering about one thing: where was it said that Major Minus is the same song that was once know as Up With the Birds? I know when it was first played live we were calling it Up With the Birds by mistake and that when we got the live feed and we saw the name was actually Major Minus we of course started calling it that... ... but beside our initial mistake on the title of this song have we had any proof that this is the same song that may have once been called Up With the Birds?
