It takes a lot to break America. You really have to work at it and play the PR game. Oasis is not one to do that. They march to their own drum and that cost them Coldplay level success in the USA back in September 1996. Coldplay works extremely hard for their current global success. They have it in them to do that. Liam and Noel can not be bothered to kiss everyones ass for 8 months while promoting an album. Chris is a wonderful PR man. The Gallaghers...not so much but they get the success anyway. Oasis is still very large throughout the world except the US. And yes, Oasis plays massive stadium in the UK and Europe, something Coldplay doesn't do often. Oasis has 8 UK #1 singles to Coldplays 1. If you don't want to count the early ones because of no internet leaks, then since 2000 Oasis still has 4 #1 singles to Coldplay's 1. The only other band I can think of from the UK that puts zero effort into album promotion in the US (not counting tours) is Radiohead.

You can say whatever you want but at the end of the day the record book says OASIS, not coldplay. Lets see Coldplay play Knebworth. More people turned up at Oasis' Manchester gig which was the same day as Live 8 in England and that featured Coldplay, U2, Paul McCartney and Richard Ashcroft. Oasis 'Oct 95 to Oct 97' beats any period of Coldplay popularity.

Oasis > Coldplay Give it up. Coldplay has tried twice now to topple Oasis' first week sales mark. First with X&Y and now with Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends. Both fell way short. X&Y had the luxury of coming out on a Monday and still didn't do it. Viva La Vida was released on a Thursday, a la Be Here Now and also came up lame in the race. I think you all forget how massively huge Oasis were and still are in England. They generate so much press coverage and have legions of dedicated followers. They have accomplished all of this without playing the corporate kiss-ass game and being PR trainwrecks yet people still flock to see them and buy their albums.
