In that case, I definitely think it's better to start off slow by listening to their more "famous" songs from each album. e.g. Creep from Pablo Honey, Fake Plastic Trees from The Bends, etc. Because chances are, if you don't like their more "well-known songs" off an album, you won't like the rest of the tracks.

Why don't you stream the albums on Spotify first before making a purchase? Especially if you're only going to buy just one of their albums.

Just out of curiosity, what are some of these "obscure" bands and/or albums you listened to?

Beyoncé is listed twice. Countdown at #7 and 1+1 at #30. Overall, it's an average list. Some inspired choices but some that make you shake your head (like Morning Mr Magpie)

Illinois definitely deserves all its praise (I even listed it in my own post) but does one good album make for a good music year? Again, feel free to disagree but I just looked back at all my records from 2005 and there's just a handful I even listen to anymore. In fact, I could probably count all of them on one hand.

To be fair, I think Cheese Nip 2 is saying that he also listened to some "obscure" bands but their material wasn't good enough (in comparison with the more "popular" bands) to place on his Top 10 list.

I was talking with some of my Korean friends this morning and they have very mixed feelings about this. On one hand, Kim Jong-Il was an evil and ruthless man, no question about it. But on the flip side, he kept things relatively stable in the region. Now? Who knows? There seem to be 4 possible scenarios: A) There is no military unrest and nothing really changes from the status quo. Country continues to deteriorate B) The military will be divided into 2 parties - one trying to maintain the status quo and the other hoping to reconcile (maybe even reunite) with South Korea, leading to internal conflict C) There will be unrest with the general population and the military, forcing the new regime to attack South Korea and establish their legitimacy D) Combination of B + C wherein the junta that wants status quo will start an armed conflict with South Korea so the majority of the military sides with the party, and the party that wants to improve relations with South Korea will probably ask South Korea and US for support/make a deal Plus, there's the question of how China will react to all of this - reports indicate that they are not impressed with Kim Jong-Un.

:p In case it wasn't clear though, I was prefacing all my opinion with the whole "music is subjective" line. For all I know, someone might think 2005 + 2006 were the pinnacle years for music. My post certainly isn't meant to present an "objective" view of music nor a critique of your music tastes. I, however, maintain my stance that 2005/2006 were weak years, especially in comparison with the rest of the decade. I just never seem to be in the mood to revisit the albums from these years (with some exceptions of course).

First off, let me start off my post with the obligatory "music is subjective" spiel. Now that's out of the way, of the listed albums above, the only ones I still listen to on a regular basis are Animal Collective's Feels and Grizzly Bear's Yellow House. The large majority of the listed albums are mediocre at best. For example, the two Boards of Canada albums you listed are widely considered to be their worst output - certainly can't compare to Music Has the Right to Children or Geogaddi. And even though I'm a huge Beck fan, I'm certainly not going to pretend Guero or The Information are good albums. Seriously, look at all the albums released in these two years and it's almost laughable how they pale in comparison to other years in the decade: 2005 had Feels, I am a Bird Now, Illinois and Late Registration. 2006 had The Drift, Return to Cookie Mountain, Silent Shout, Yellow House and Ys. In two years, that's a total of 9 albums that have any lasting power and/or influence. Just to put things in perspective, let's take a look at 2007's output. 2007: The National's Boxer, Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago, The Field's From Here We Go Sublime, Radiohead's In Rainbows, Arcade Fire's Neon Bible, Panda Bear's Person Pitch, Feist's The Reminder, LCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver, Animal Collective's Strawberry Jam, and Burial's Untrue. That's a total of 10 really good albums in a single year.

Looks like Bon Iver, Bon Iver is rightfully being recognized as the most overrated album of 2011.

2005 + 2006 were pretty bad.

Not that it really matters, but Mylo Xyloto is being left off virtually all the critics' lists.

In my opinion, 2011 has been an incredible year for music, one of the best in recent memory. When quality albums like EMA's Past Life Martyred Saints and Lykke Li's Wounded Rhymes can't even break my Top 50, you know there's been some really great stuff. Also, 2011 was an interesting year for music: unlike 2010, a relatively weak year with a definitive AOTY (My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy), 2011 had an abnormal number of quality albums but no clear-cut AOTY. That being said, Let England Shake or Bon Iver, Bon Iver will probably populate the #1 spot on most critics' Top Albums lists. What about Room(s), Severant or Glass Swords?
