I mis-represented Prince's lyrics a bit. He also wrote about religious themes. In fact, I was just shocked to learn he wrote a song called What If? (Another Coldplay comparison! This one turns out to be one of my favorite Contemporary Christian songs, as recorded by Nicole Nordeman. Worth a look. Here's an interim riddle: Humpty Dumpty and a bottle of aspirin.

Thanks. I was about to withdraw it. I don't want anyone subjected to reading Prince's often-filthy lyrics in search of an answer. I was just thinking of the cleaner ones. Reading others, now, makes me think it's not appropriate to send Coldplayers searching many of his other songs, that I didn't know. That was the thing about Prince: Brilliant musician, humanitarian and individual not afraid of shock value. I definitely don't condone his lyrics. I'm glad we can be proud of Coldplay's! FYI, I was thinking of Little Red Corvette and Up and Up - "fixing Up A Car", When Doves Cry and Fly On - lamenting "maybe some day I will fly with you" and Fury to Charlie Brown - a rose.

Ok. I feel like an Ode to Prince is in order. He had three particular images in his songs that link to three different Coldplay songs, in terms of similar imagery. What are the images and which lines do you connect them to in which Coldplay songs? Have fun! There are bound to be more than three, so I'm not going to be specific about the three I have in mind.

I am sick over the cruel, early death of a legend, Prince. In the 80's, I spent a year Minneapolis over two work assignments. Prince was already my musical hero. Friends danced with him at his downtown nightclub. They said he barely came up over their waist. One weekend, on a whim, I took a road trip out to the country in search of his infamous purple house. My car was completely covered in mud in the rain. I never found it, but later learned it was nearby. His music, while I may not have agreed with its overt themes and language, was a big part of the soundtrack of my life. Heartbroken.
