Like I already said, he could have gone for the safe route, but he tried something different to make the beat it more interesting. Not analysed the drums intensely, only listened to it 3 times. And also the crash in the song sounds particularly sweet.

My main "problem" with the drums on Violet Hill is the sound. The drums are overproduced on this song,i can barely hear the snare.....its just the bass,the hi-hat and sometimes the cymbals.

Shame on brian eno even for this particular...

Just listened to it through headphones and I'm starting to wonder if there actually is any snare on it? There's some before the chorus/refrain, but I mean through the verse, is it just bass drum and some weird hi-hat pattern?
