March 6, 200521 yr I've wondered many times why does everyone call the United States "America" and it's people "Americans"? I know it's a meaningless request when I ask my friends, the ones not from my country, to call the country and it's citizen by any other name, except America and Americnas, respectively, but I really get mad because the word means the whole continent, including me and the 15 million people living here and in the 14 countries here and so on, but no one seems to remember that. When did the "New World" became "America"?
March 6, 200521 yr I doubt many people even think of it, it's just the convention. Well, it's common enough to say the US in reference to the country, but rarely are the people anything other than Americans. It is true to call them that though, they do hail from the continent like.
March 6, 200521 yr I guess its short for the United States of America... yes its true.. there are other 'Americas' like South and Central.. but I suppose its just for short.

March 7, 200521 yr Would you call someone from Brazil an American? Thought not...what does it matter as long as no-one gets confused?
March 7, 200521 yr Author Well, you might not but we do. I'm Chilean aswell as American and we all are here; we just answer depending to who's asking (If someone from the States or Canada asks me, obviously I will not tell them I'm "American" because they confuse, but we tell to most the oppositte) and yes, I had a couple of questions yesterday; well I always do
