Coldplay & Cingular

Featured Replies

If you read news on this site regularly you probably saw that the band sold a sample of their single to Cingular and are going to be part of Cingular's new ad campagin. Does this bother anyone? Maybe it shouldn't, but it definetely bothers me.... I can't imagine being in a band as important as Coldplay and making the decision that you want to associate yourself with a wireless company... makes the song lose its meaning... any one else feel this way?

I feel that way about a lot of songs that are sold to commercials. I guess if I really like a band, it hurts a bit, it cheapens the quality of the song for me because when I hear it, I think of the ad.

Part of what ad campaign? Coldplay only gave their song available as a ring tone, and every wireless company has Coldplay ringtones. It's really nothing special, other than Cingular getting SoS first.

As long as they aren't making any ad campaigns, I'll be fine. I have Cingular though so..you know. I don't mind. Just as long as they don't appear in any stupid commercials, I'm cool.

Yah, it looks like it's just a ringtone, they made a deal with Cingular:

Cingular will help artists debut new songs via ringtones. Cingular Sounds is a new ringtone download service for subscribers that will feature new singles before or at the same time as their release for radio play. Sounds launched today with Coldplay's new single "Speed of Sound," from their new album due out in June. Although this is a US first, bands and record labels in Europe and Asia have released songs, and even whole albums, as ringtones before they were available for purchase.

"The preview, which comes a week before radio gets the track, is hitched with a massive marketing campaign to put Coldplay graphics on the Cingular web site, give the band premium placement on the provider's ringtone purchase pages".... This is what I was referring to when I said ad campaign.... but I guess it's just on the Cingular site not on TV or anything

Which isn't all that bad, doesn't hurt the band's credibility.

as long as they dont use it in commercials, im fine with it being a ringtone...i mean every other company will eventually have it.

Debs said in the News on the official site that Coldplay haven't signed for it or something like that. I was kind of confused by that, but i took the meaning to be that it was a deal between Cingular and the record company and the band had nothing to do with it.

my sentiments exactly! i love U2's music, but i just hope coldplay doesn't do an ipod spin-off too.

yea but anyways i think they're selling themselves, first the MTV stuff and now this...

what's next???  :/

they're selling themselves??

bullshit!

they HAVE TO spread their work.

But how, exactly?

By giving a 40 second clip of Speed of Sound as a ringtone to a wireless company? Every other wireless comp will have SoS by the time the album releases anyway. I don't see how this is selling themselves.

The MTV thing is for a concert. What does that have to do with selling themselves?

it just doesn't seem right to me... plus they will be recieving extra money from this

but hey, mabe it's just me... at least i hope so

yeah, it just you. i HOPE SO. :P

they wont receive money directly from this, they will just get exposure

ok thanks for clearing this up ;)

No money :)
