Swiss outrage at violence

Featured Replies

Swiss players have exposed the extent of the abuse dished out by Turkey during Wednesday's World Cup qualifying play-off.

Defender Stephane Grichting was hospitalised after receiving a kick in the stomach at the end of the match and was treated for a perforated urinary channel.

Violence erupted in the tunnel following Switzerland's qualification, with Swiss players claiming they were attacked by their Turkish opposition and a number of security guards.

Johan Lonfat, Johann Vogel, Benjamin Huggel and trainer Erich Burgener were all caught in the fracas.

"It is a scandal," fumed Swiss coach Kobi Kuhn. "I never saw it, nobody saw it - Turkish police officers stopped television crews from filming what happened in the tunnel."

Sochaux's Lonfat added: "After the match, the players were pushed around in the tunnel leading to the changing rooms. There, the Swiss players were worked over by Turkish players and police officers.

"Grichting got a kick in the privates and was bleeding. I was attacked. It is incredible."

Sepp Blatter, who is himself Swiss, has revealed his outrage at the events and has threatened to exclude Turkey from the 2010 World Cup.

It has also emerged that the Swiss government are considering legal action. Spokesman Raphael Saborit confirmed: "We can't exclude the possibility of there being action.

"We are seeing what we can do or say but initially we need to be put in touch with the people concerned."

I heard it on the radio.....that the turkish fans whisteled when the national anthem of switzerland was played and that they were violent after the game.......they were bad losers I think!

i watched this game last evening on TV and it was so scandalous! When the reporter of German ARD-Channel made an interview with two players of Switzerland (one of them was Ludovic Magnin) just after the game ended, the camera man was hit by a security man. When the camera man wanted to show scenes in the tunnel, another security man came and hit him again. The reporter was very afraid and they couldn't finish the interview. They stopped it and the 2 players ran directly to their cabine.

2-3 years ago there were similar violences in Turkey when the German U21 team shot a goal in additional time. German players were hit by Turkish players, security men and police. :o

I thought it was hilarious when the match finished and the Swiss players just looked around each other, jumped up and then legged it out of the pitch

It's about time FIFA/UEFA took strong action against Turkey - it's just the latest in a long line of disgraceful incidents involving football matches in that country. Don't forget the Leeds fans who were stabbed to death out there a few years back!!

English teams were banned from European competition for several years because of the "hooliganism", and the same should now happen to Turkish teams.

You can't have one rule for one country and another for all the others. It's unbelievable that it's been allowed to continue for this long............................

I saw the interviews on Swiss TV tonight. There were also pics shown that weren't shown yesterday. They were made by some Turkish TV station, I think. Two camera men from the Swiss TV channel SF DRS were interviewed and they said that they weren't aloud to take any pics of what had happened.

I agree with you. But I think one of the problems is that also Swiss players were involved on the incident, so they might get punished as well. On Turkish TV pics were shown on which Huggel kicks some guy of the Turkish team, they didn't show what had happened before. I think the worst of all is that the Swiss team had been warned. The Swiss coach Köbi Kuhn told the players to leave the pitch as fast as possible because he expected something like this to happen. That's what he said on an interview tonight. Another strange incident happened on the Turkish border. Some players had to wait twenty minutes till their passports were checked and when they runned to chatch the bus things were thrown at them.

Anyway - it was very just that Switzerland won!! :D

Mob rule can't be allowed to succeed!!

Well they didn't win actually, but they are qualified for the World Cup. I'm so, so happy!

Yes they did - on away goals!! That counts!! :D

it is just ridiculous but not surprising ... you wouldn't see this happen in any other country even with fierce rivalries .. this disgusting on field behaviour only seems to happen in Turkey .... i think they should be banned from even trying to qualify for Euro 2008 .. maybe then they will learn ...

Definitely!! They need to be taught a lesson!! :D

Yep, they should be banned from 2008, and if it doesn't get better, 2010 too...

yeah, I agree!

And besides that a country, which doesn't respect the freedom of press should be banned from the EU for severaly years, too...

^There are a host of reasons why Turkey isn't suitable for EU membership!!

At the end of the day, Turkey has nothing in common with "Europe", does it??

firstly Swiss supports whisteled our National anthem on the first match..

Sally , you say " Huggel kicks some guy of the Turkish team, they didn't show what had happened before." so do they show what was happened , what did swiss players or swiss supporters did before we had done in response?how can you believe that's all what is shown to you??

i saw lots of disgusting things English hooligans did..so how do you think that we are the only ..

I did know how europeans have prejudices about Turkey but i have never seen live examples like that.. :confused:I don't say what we did was right.. but i can't accept to blame only Turkey because what was happened.. and i dont expect fair results from Fifa which has a Swiss President..

first of all it was a very bad night not only we were eliminated but also we and swiss players-both- failed in humanity.things had started in Switzerland and unfortunately we continued it although we didnt have to do like that.you all agree with that Turkey and Switzerland(or some of swiss players) must be punished.i agree with you too.but that punishments like "Turkey should be banned from 2008 or 2010..etc" are too heavy.i strongly believe that we wont take a punishment like that.maybe they can give a "4 or 5 matches not to be played in our home.and a big money punishment and 5-10 match-punishments for some players both from Turkey and Switzerland"

also i guess all of you heard the director/chairman (idk which one is true) of FIFA.he asserted ,WITHOUT any reports from observers, referees, etc, that Turkey will be punished and Turkey violated fair-play,etc. that statement was very very interesting as well as wrong.he can say these words if he was a spectator but he CANNOT blame Turkey without any reports.

and lastly you say that "Turkey has nothing in common with Europe" .i am really really sad about Europeans then!!!

one more thing we all know that we cannot generalize a nation by looking at their "some hundreds of" spectators...

waiting for your thoughts... (i will write as soon as possible if you state your opinions)

English hooligans have been targetted for years - and rightly so, but the Turkish hooligans have been literally "getting away with murder". The F.A. have cracked down hard on the hooligan element in England, but there doesn't seem to have been any similar crackdown in Turkey. Why??

I agree with you and i am sorry about europeans having distinct prejudices about Turks..

if only we had the oppurtunities to play fairly by other teams in national areas. it must be a really success when playing against not only the other team but Fifa , Uefa , refrees , prejudices..

Murders dont have excuses but you are talking about "drunk hooligans provocations" . and people who killed them are in prison now. how do you believe that Turkish Football teams can be blamed for that murders ?

English teams were banned from European competition because of the fans' actions. Turkey should be treated the same way.

yeah the reason was , 39 people were killed and 600 people were injured in Belgium because of the hooligans. and it took place in Stadium!!

we will get punishment of course ...
