I fell in love from listening Lazarus and Half Light, off the Lazarus single. I got into the softer side of PT before exploring everything else.

And oh wow, that's pretty damn cool. :shocked2:

For me it was Buying New Soul (full length) and Arriving Somewhere But Not Here.

Trains was the first Porcupine Tree song that I fell in love with. I heard that song, and went out and bought In Absentia later that week. From that point on, I've loved the band.

Trains is beautiful. I wanted to buy In Absentia once, but my sister said the album cover freaked her out so she wouldn't let me. XD Props to Lasse for that.

shipoffools, are you headed to the concert in Cleveland in September?

In Abesntia's cover is weird, I don't like Fear of a blank planet's cover either.

I'm sorry to hear that. :( And yes, the album cover is a bit freaky (but it's also really cool. :D)

I'm not sure. I saw Porcupine Tree live in 2005, which was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. It depends on whether I can get time off from school to do a 3 hour drive (6 hours there and back), and hotel bills and stuff like that. I might stay with family up there, but again, it all depends.

I kind of liked Fear Of A Blank Planet's cover. It illustrated the music perfectly.

^ I agree. Seeing the child portrayed like that on the album fit what I expected to hear on the album.

Deadwing has a gorgeous album cover, though. I really like it.

Theres some great artwork for deadwing, also In Absentia http://www.porcupinetree.com/multimedia.cfm Love that blury old style effect.

*edit* I tried to do some porcupine tree style prints, came out bad, but its a start.

Might actaully take some weird photos of some woods and fields and do some more.

They look pretty good! And hey, if you don't think they're good, then at least you've got a good start? I'd love to see some others you're planning, like of the woods.

My friend does edits like these. She's a pro at photoshop though, so yeah. XD

Thanks, wish I was pro at PS but needs alot of patience!

Album news!

The Incident

06-12-2009

Porcupine Tree are happy to announce the forthcoming release of their tenth studio album "The Incident". The record is set to be released via Roadrunner Records worldwide on 21st September, as a double CD.

The centre-piece is the title track, which takes up the whole of the first disc. The 55-minute work is described as “a slightly surreal song cycle about beginnings and endings and the sense that ‘after this, things will never be the same again’.”

The self-produced album is completed by four standalone compositions that developed out of band writing sessions last December - Flicker, Bonnie The Cat, Black Dahlia, and Remember Me Lover feature on a separate EP length disc to stress their independence from the song cycle.

Video footage of the band in the studio working on The Incident, as well as audio previews, will be available online soon. The band will tour extensively to promote the album from mid September onwards.

Can't wait. :D

Woohoo! That sounds amazing, I can't wait to hear it. :D

More news! (Gotta love having a friend who is utterly obsessed with PT. XD)

New York, NY - Grammy-nominated UK recording artist Porcupine Tree have confirmed the title of their tenth studio album: The Incident. The captivating new record is set to be released on Roadrunner Records on September 22, as a double CD.

The Incident is a stunning 55-minute musical statement, described by vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Steven Wilson as “a slightly surreal song cycle about beginnings and endings and the sense that ‘after this, things will never be the same again.’” The seeds of the idea that led to The Incident came to Wilson as he became caught up in a highway traffic jam while driving past an accident.

“There was a sign saying ‘POLICE – INCIDENT’ and everyone was slowing down to rubber neck to see what had happened,” he recalls. “Afterwards, it struck me that ‘incident’ is a very detached word for something so destructive and traumatic for the people involved. And then I had the sensation that the spirit of someone that had died in the accident entered into my car and was sitting next to me.

“The irony of such a cold expression for such seismic events appealed to me, and I began to pick out other ‘incidents’ reported in the media and news,” continues Wilson. “I wrote about the evacuation of teenage girls from a religious cult in Texas, a family terrorizing its neighbors, a body found floating in a river by some people on a fishing trip, and more. Each song is written in the first person and tries to humanize the detached media reportage.”

Additionally, Wilson delved back into incidents in his own life that had profoundly affected him, including a lost childhood friendship, a séance, his first love and the day that he decided to give up secure employment to follow his dream of making music.

The self-produced album is completed by four standalone compositions that developed out of band writing sessions last December – “Flicker,” “Bonnie The Cat,” “Black Dahlia” and “Remember Me Lover” – housed on a separate CD to stress their independence from the title track.

Porcupine Tree – completed by Gavin Harrison (drums), Colin Edwin (bass), and Richard Barbieri (keyboards) – took a video camera into the recording studio, capturing a few moments to share with fans. Explore the behind-the-scenes footage here.

Coming to the recording sessions following his first ever solo album, November 2008’s Insurgentes, Wilson admits that the experience of having worked alone affected the direction of The Incident. “Possibly because of having done that, this record is darker, expansive, and more experimental,” he theorizes. “But when I write for Porcupine Tree, I know the sound I’m after.”

Porcupine Tree’s latest masterpiece The Incident will be released September 22.

oh man! freaking fantastic news! Just made my day (as it is about to end)

Thanks for that! Video sounds like classic PT cant wait!

i recently got into "lazarus".

i'm totally new to porcupine tree, so are there any songs you could recomend to a new listener? maybe some quieter songs?

Trains from In Absentia album and Mellotron Scratch from Deadwing, mabye even Arriving Somewhere but here from deadwing also. From Stupid Dream album try pure narcotic, even less and piano lessons.

Lazerus definatly seems to be the 'break in' song for most people!

Lazarus is absolutely beautiful.

There's also another song that I first heard when I got into PT and that was Half Light. It's off the Lazarus single and it's a very soft and quiet song. Very beautiful.

iadamh named a few off the top of my head already, there's also Buying New Soul, The Start Of Something Beautiful (at first, anyway), Collapse The Light Into Earth, Feel So Low, The Rest Will Flow (this one's more about the lighter tone in the song more than anything), Where We Would Be, Baby Dream In Cellophane, Always Never, and possibly loads more that I've missed. But I just went through my collection to find those ones, so there's a start for you. :D

If you like quieter songs, you might like the earlier albums, like Up The Downstair, Signify, Stupid Dream, and Lightbulb Sun. Sleep Of No Dreaming is a great song, so is Not Beautiful Anymore, Always Never, Shesmovedon, and Piano Lessons.

But any of the albums are worth picking up.

More news! (Gotta love having a friend who is utterly obsessed with PT. XD)

Hmmm.

Hmmmmmmm.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

:laugh3:

'Sup guys?

I've been a fan of PT since late last summer. Of course, I ended up getting pulled in by Lazarus, hehe. Surprisingly, it took me a considerably longer length of time to warm up to them than I typically do to bands but it was well worth it as they've pretty well essentially changed and broadened my musical horizons for the better. I couldn't stand heavier music yet before PT came along.

My favourite song is Pure Narcotic (see user title) and my favourite album is Deadwing, by far. Absolutely love it as an album and the cover is gorgeous - I love Lasse Hoile's work. I'd say the only song I DON'T care for, on that album at least, is Glass Arm Shattering.

I can't wait for The Incident. I have tickets to see them in September.

Hey, at least you're not denying it.

Think they'll take a whack at playing the 55 minute song at your concert? It'd be awesome to get a snippet at least.

The 55 minute song cycle IS the whole first disc of the album. I think it's a given that they'll play it. I'm guessing they'll either open with a few classics like Blackest Eyes or Open Car and then play the first disc of The Incident, then come back with some more older stuff and maybe one or two songs off the EP (second disc) or play it first, then the rest.
