Buying a Guitar... which one?

Featured Replies

Ok so I want to start learning guitar now, and I was just wondering exactly what kind of model I should get etc. I wanna go for an acoustic but I don't know what to expect for pricing, and what is a good price for somebody just starting off. (canadian prices)

Anybody have any info on this? thx a lot in advance

i don't know about canadian prices

(seeing as i don't live there) but i suggest you get an acoustic epiphone in the $90 - $150 range (AJ - 100 or DR-200 are good quality)

ok cool thanks i'll look into that, but another general question. Is an acoustic guitar just an acoustic guitar? I mean there aren't really any significant differences between the models are there?

Well I live in Canada also and I have 2 acoustic guitars.both fenders one was $700 and 12 string electric was $999. I think they sound alot better than less expensive ones but you dont need that really for a first guitar. I bought a fender strat first for 400 off ebay

well i dunno 400 may be a bit too much for me right now.... i called a nearby music store and they said they had some yamaha acoustic for around 150... does nebody kno if yamaha's are any good?

A Yamaha would be great for just starting out. Just a tip though, go down to the store and ask to try the guitar's out, even if you can't play anything just move your fingers round the strings and press down on the frets and stuff, see if you like the feel of it. (Also look how high the strings are off the neck of the guitar, the lower the better.)

When I started off playing acoustic guitar I bought a "Yamaha C 40".

It was a good choice. It's very easy and comfortable to play.

Doesn't anybody want a Martin...lol!!!

I play a Taylor Acoustic. They're factory-made, but they're built to customer specs...They're also not cheap. Mine's costing me $1125 CAN. used. Fortunately, I'm buying from a friend who's letting me pay in installments. If you have the money, there are few nicer acoustics out there. As for the Yamaha-has, be careful with the low end ones. It's not always wise to start with the cheapest guitar you can find, because if you're not feeling good about the sound or the feel, you'll be less likely to practice. And all joking aside, you can buy some pretty nice Martins in the $4-$700 range. Hope that helps.

Hey! That's the same model that I bought about 2 weeks ago as well. :P How is it working out for you? I'm just starting out on guitar...trying to teach myself. So far I'm just working on the basic chords and scales.

Yeah same here, it's working out pretty well i've been practicing fairly often. I know all the chords and everything for songs like Dont Panic but I just need to impove on my speed btwn switching them. Its lots of fun, u should try "Hurt" by Johnny Cash, u get a good grasp on some easy chords. Neways keep me updated on how you're doing, we can share some tips maybe haha
