leeds113
Bono Feels 'Exploited' by Berlusconi Bono has complained to Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi of Italy about the use of his picture in a campaign magazine and challenged him to make good on promises for African aid, Reuters reported. "Mr. Berlusconi, as flattered as I can be of appearing in your brochure, I also feel a bit exploited," the Irish rock star said in a letter reprinted on the front page of the newspaper Corriere Della Sera yesterday. The glossy 161-page campaign magazine was published by the prime minister's Forza Italia party in advance of elections next week. It features a picture of Bono with the caption, "The Irish star is grateful to the prime minister for the actions promoted by the Italian government toward poor countries." In his letter, Bono said: "If your commitment is real and your signature is trustworthy, then the world wants to know how Italy intends to reach this target." He said Italy would have to more than double its handouts by 2010 to honor its past commitments. In a statement yesterday, the Italian government responded, "The difficulties we are going through — and we are not the only ones — due to the unfavorable economic context are visible to all and can cause some delays." The statement added, "We will show with the facts the strength of our commitment to the poorest countries." http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/03/arts/03arts.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

an_cat
Good for Bono. Time for these bigwigs to put their money where their fuckin' mouths are. What I love about Bono is how savvy he is. He's not just walking around shaking hands and saying "Please, some people are dying, just do something." He's giving real plans, real methods to get poverty under control and hopefully eliminated, and he puts pressure on the people who have the dough. And he doesn't let himself get used without having something to say about it. Everyday I love him more and more and politics less and less. Denise
No probs ;) As I already said I don't like him, and I also think he has too many interests to be Prime Minister, but anyway, I believe foreign newspapers (as well as Italian) just say what they want to say...something's true some other isn't, but it's no point to name Mussolini. Anyway coming back to the main news, Bono has just done the right thing as long as he felt exploited, and he just answered in the best way, remembering the promises Berlusconi should keep in mind in order to spend his name anywehere else again :)
