Driving...

Featured Replies

Well...I have a problem...:\ It's kinda silly...

I passed my test in January, but have only just bought a car this week. It's a cute little car, and I love it, but im finding it hard to drive again.

So not only am I trying to get my confidence back after being off the road so long, but also trying to get used to this old banger that i've got now.

I just went driving again this morning to try it out, and oh god it was awful!!! I just can't get used to the car....I was looking forward to finally being able to have some freedom but I guess it's not coming yet  ....im even too scared to drive it on my own! How silly is that??? :embarassed:

Has anyone else had problems like this? Did you get used to it quickly and get your confidence back?

I don't have a car, can't drive and I don't want to.I prefer walking or travelling by horse

i wish i could help Steph, but i drove in my life only once and i don't have any driving license (2 years till 18)...lol

actually i drove a good car, so it was easy :/

Well Steph...I know this...when I passed my test i had to get used to this old car i still drive...at the beginning i thought I would never be able to drive it....but after I drove a bit with it I really liked it and I know how it works now and everything is ok....you just have to be brave enough and then it works...:nice:

Haha, I know that problem too well, Steph :)

After I passed my test I didn't drive for half a year (due to lack of a car) - after that period I applied to a job. After some weeks they told me, that they need me as a driver so they got me a company car and I had to drive for several hours every day.

The first weeks were scary. I completely forgot how to drive and was scared as hell that I'm gonna get involved in a car crash. But after some weeks of hell I got more and more confident and now (about 6 months later) driving that car (even the big buses of our company) is no big deal to me anymore.

But my Mum got a new car last year and I'm allowed to drive it, too - but I absolutely can't! It feels so different than my company car - I either kill the engine or do a noisy wheelspin. But the last days I tried to drive it more often and now I'm getting better and better.

Steph, you should just drive - even if you don't like it. Confidence goes along with practice. You should avoid difficult situations and accept detours befour you do the things that scare you.

The Best thing is to drive when the streets in your city are calm so you have enough time to practice things like parking etc. That's what I did, at least - and it helped alot.

Thanks Julia, that makes me feel a bit better :nice:

Im not a very confident person in general...I get worried quite easily...so I guess it's to do with that.

Lera - perhaps I should trade my car for horse?

Hehe, that's what i've been doing! :D :laugh4:

yeah, but that goes over after some time... if you get stuck in a uncomfortable situation (busy roads) it's better to drive home at first (although I couldn't do that during work :laugh3: ) and take some deep breaths.

It's a hard time, I know that Steph, but you're gonna make it :)

Steph, I think Ive said a few things to you already, but anyway, I can relate to what you're saying! I passed in Nov 04, so Ive been driving over a year now, but I still get scared sometimes when Im in busy traffic etc, under pressure, hard turnings (like right out of a junction across a busy road (eeek!!)

After I had first passed, it dawned on me that Im gonna have to go out on my own, I was pretty damn scared!! The main thing was that Id learned in a nice new car and then I had to drive my mums car which is quite older and does not have power steering, it was a bit of a struggle at first. Things like parallel parking are still tricky but Ive got used to the steering! Ive stalled it a couple of times, but everyone does it. Just dont take any notice of other people if they hoot or whatever, Ive had that lol!!!!

All I can say is that you shouldnt give up... just keep going, even though it's real scary. I felt worried to begin with, but now after making myself do it to begin with, its a whole lot better. Im totally sure that in a few months you'll be fine :nice:

Thanks for the kind words Winnie :nice:

Kara, that's another thing - this one doesn't have power steering, so I have to get used to that too! And some evil man tooting at me  Meanies...cant they see my wonderful green 'P' plates? :dozey: :laugh4:

Cheers people, I feel so much better now than I did earlier

After I passed my test I really want to drive as soon as possible. :D I like driving! My family has 2 cars and I don't have any problems with them. At work I often have to drive cars by Europcar, so I think I already drove at least 30 different cars. ;) The first time I felt a bit unsafeness was when I had to drive to the Netherlands. I didn't know the speed limits on their motorways there and here in Germany you are normally allowed to drive on motorways as fast as possible. ;) I was also a bit afraid that the police will stop me there, because a lot of Germans are smuggling drugs over the border. Well, I didn't had drugs in my car but I think it's a strange situation to be stopped by a police, especially in another country. ;)

Steph, do you have a place in your city where you can legally practise driving a car? I don't know the English word of it, sorry. Before I've taken driving lessons I drove with my parents to a place like that and it really helped me.
