The Golden Compass Gets New Director

Source: The Hollywood Reporter May 8, 2006

Chris Weitz, who originally wrote the screenplay for the first installment of Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy, The Golden Compass, has returned to the project to direct after stepping down last year.

Director Anand Tucker, who had taken over for Weitz, recently left due to creative differences, but New Line Cinemas still hopes it will be ready for release on November 16, 2007.

Having previously co-directed About a Boy and American Pie with his brother Paul, Weitz told The Hollywood Reporter: "Though I'm disappointed that New Line and Anand didn't end up seeing eye to eye, when I was told the job of directing 'Golden Compass' was open, there was just no way that I could pass it up."

Nicole Kidman Offered Role of Mrs Coulter, says the Mail

Posted by Ian on Jun 12, 2006 11:42 am

The Daily Mail reports that Australian actress Nicole Kidman has been offered the part of Mrs Coulter in the upcoming Golden Compass film. The Oscar-winning actress hasn't yet accepted the part as she's in the middle of wedding preparations. The deal is therefore termed as "under discussion". Philip Pullman has in the past said he would like to see Kidman in the role.

also :

He (Pullman) also says of the film adaptation, "I’m worried, but I’m not going to do anything about it, partly because I have no power. They bought the rights, they can do what they like with it," and that, if Hollywood does try to "Disneyfy" his works, "there are ten million readers or something all over the world who will say this is a load of bloody rubbish."

*fingers crossed it won't be Disneyfied*

^ i agree seems like they were aiming for a supernatural object - ala Lord of the 'Rings'-rather than the natural phenomena. perhaps they were afraid people would think it was a nature documentry...

Bettany & Kidman = Asriel & Coulter?

Posted by Will on Jul 14, 2006 08:11 am

The Daily Mail is claiming that Paul Bettany is near taking the role of Lord Asriel in the forthcoming His Dark Materials films. The paper says that he is "facing the last hurdle in negotiations." Following up on its previous claim that Nicole Kidman has been offered the Mrs Coulter role, it says that "people on the film" have been telling others that the star will be in the movie and that she has "agreed to cut her multi-million-dollar fee." "[Paul and Nicole] get on, so him being in the film is something Nicole is taking into consideration," one executive reportedly told the Mail. Read more.

Dakota Blue Richards has been cast in the lead role of Lyra Belacqua. Richards, 12 years old, landed the role after filmmakers conducted an extensive casting search. More than 10,000 young girls attended open calls in Oxford, Cambridge, Exeter, and Kendal, before Richards was chosen from the Cambridge call for a further audition and subsequent screen test.

^ i don't know about Nicole i never pictured her...some one like Monica would have been cool, but the author always pictured Nicole in the role.

Would've been cool to have Paul Bettany as Lord Asriel but hey Daniel Craig looks kinda similar:

Daniel Craig will be Lord Asriel

A casting process that has gone through Eric Bana and Paul Bettany comes to an end: Variety reported this morning and New Line have confirmed to us that Daniel Craig will take the role of Lord Asriel in The Golden Compass movie. Craig is the current actor to hold the role of James Bond and his first film in the part, Casino Royale, is released this autumn. It also stars Eva Green, who plays Serafina Pekkala in His Dark Materials.

Armoured Bear Band

Posted by Will on Nov 13, 2006 09:17 am

Irish-based band Armoured Bear's debut single came out last week. The group say they're "big fans of the books, and all things HDM, and always give it a mention at live shows." The band's debut single, Imagination went on release last Friday (Oct. 20th) and is also available on iTunes. Mr. Pullman has recieved a copy of the full twelve track album entitled Honeycomb Mooons (released Jan. 2007) and responded positively to the music. Check their website for more. If the 'fan music' alarm bell is ringing in your head, rest assured - the band kindly sent us a copy of the album and the music is very amenable.

"...an interview with Eva Green in the French magazine Studio.

In the article it mentions that Eric Bana and Kevin Bacon will star in the The Golden Compass movie.

At the moment no sources are confirming it yet..."

it would be cool if they're in it but seems to good to be true.

if true however wonder what characters they will be playing(?).

I still say it will do a lot better if they called it by it's proper name (Northern Lights) in Europe and the rest of the world, as it's only called "Golden Compass" in america. Although they might do what they did with the first Harry Potter book and call it whatever it's american name was in america only.

They included most of the major parts of the book, writing out some of the minor parts.

However the film cuts out the last 3 chapters when Lord A kills Roger to create the bridge to the city in the stars, leaving the end of the film with the 2 kids in Lee's air-ship thing, flying towards Lord A.
