Kurt Cobain voted as biggest rock 'n' roll hero

Kurt Cobain has been voted as the greatest rock 'n' roll hero of all time by readers of NME.

In this week's special edition of NME - out nationwide today (May 10) - the late Nirvana guitarist has been shown to still be inspiring music lovers across the world, over ten years after his tragic suicide.

"The first time I met Kurt he was watching 'The Wizard Of Oz' on TV at a B&B in Shepherd's Bush just before 'Sliver' was released - he looked like a grunge Christopher Robin," former NME writer Steve Lamacq remembers. "There was something very innocent about Kurt, he had an almost childlike detachment. The way he used to withdraw inside himself made him a terrific observer of people."

Also featuring in NME's Heroes Poll are stars including Liam Gallagher, Morrissey, Pete Doherty, David Bowie, Ian Brown, Joe Strummer, John Lennon, Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl and Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner.

For the full top fifty heroes of all time, be sure to pick up this week's issue of NME, which also includes the full report on the return of Radiohead, behind the scenes reports from the NME New Music Tour, an exclusive track-by-track of Dirty Pretty Things debut LP 'Waterloo To Anywhere' written by the band themselves and our verdict on The Raconteurs' 'Broken Boy Soldiers'.

Alex Turner is on the list? :stunned: rock n roll hero of all time?

same thought...

if anyone has bought NME, please share the full list ;)

You kidding? Chris Martin for the best rock'n'roll hero? Comparing him with Curt Cobain is ridicuolus.

agreed.

i'll vote for Ian Brown if i can, anyway

first of all, Coldplay have nothing to do with Rock'n'Roll...so any mentions that Coldplay should be in that list are ridiculous

Elvis or Freddie Mercury are the greatest IMO

Cobain's 1st place is ridiculous as well...

I didn't say that Curt is the best, just wanna say that Chris can't be the best rock'n'roll hero. Elvis deserves this, cos he's a real rock'n'roll god.

Alex Turner? Fuck off.

overrated like his band. i gave a try their album, it's not bad either good, it's pretty average and i kinda don't understand why are they so amazing???

btw i'm not surprised that the readers of NME voted for him...there was "the greatest british album" vote and AM's LP finished 5th or what the fuck...

What a pile of processed shit.

*big yawn*

And frankly, I don't see why people pee on themselves with excitement everytime it comes to Kurt Cobain. Sorry guys, hope I don't insult anyone, but I hate him. And Nirvana. A lot. Rock 'n Roll hero? No. Definately not. I won't insult the music, I swear I won't do that because I know how personal people would take that... but god. He never did any good for me. No hero of mine.

Fucking idiots. Doherty? So killing yourself slowly is an atribute for a "Hero"? John Lennon should win, the fact that he is even LISTED with those other people is an insult to him and his memory. And I love half those people (Liam, Alex, Ian, Bowie, etc) but... John Lennon and Doherty on the same list.

Christ. I might just go cut my eyes out right now. Unbelievable.

I'm bored of their album already. I'm still listening to most other top 2005 albums though.

Oh and EXCUSE ME NME, but WHAT ABOUT BOB FUCKING DYLAN?!

*moans* People have no taste anymore!

EDIT:

lmfao. NME. More like "NME to Good Taste"

*bitching is fun!*

Who's Alex Turner?...

Oh and EXCUSE ME NME, but WHAT ABOUT BOB FUCKING DYLAN?!

*moans* People have no taste anymore!

It's not bad taste, its short memories

Arctic Monkeys?...Rock'n'roll? Haha don't peple know that real rock'n'roll isn't 2000-s?...

So true.

3/4ths of the people on that list (and I would even argue ALL of them) wouldn't be there without him. Or Elvis. Or even The Beatles as a whole. I like to see Bowie on there, glad to see that people still remember him... but what the fuck? Sacrifice legends for today's hot items. And don't get me wrong, I actually love Alex Turner. Legend? No. My future husband? Yep.

LMFAO wtf. Why am I so pissed off about this????

actually Bon Dylan might be there *still waiting for the full list...*

He still should be number one.

*POUTS!*

:(

No Bono or Dylan?

But Pete Doherty? This is one big joke.

hero?? hmmm I don't know how I feel about that..

he was a great writer.. and musician. I think I honestly have him to thank for my 'branching out' into rock and alternative music.. but a hero? Do I really want to idolized someone who commited suicide? I fel torn on that issue having lost a friend to suicide as well.. but, he was definitely an innovator.. and one hell of a writer.

God rest his soul.
