Next Generation DVDs

Featured Replies

I did search but couldn't find any thread about the dvd war which is hotting up.

We all know the main battle of blu-ray vs. HD-DVD with a few other (mainly Enhanced Versatile Disc and portable read-only hard-drives), but the question is which do you think will be the winner in the war?

Apart from the shareholders who will love the extra income from high def dvds sales.

I think a nifty poll is in order

I personally hope that neither Blu Ray or HD DVD wins and that they will fade into obscurity. We don't need another format, and we don't need another few players in our homes. I have a feeling that Blu Ray will win, and only because it is included in the PS3. But then again, the PS3 is not looking that great atm, so we will have to wait and see.

Well I hope that at least one format will win, so that we would have a player that would read whatever standard would win and DVDs and CDs...

Nope, Blu-Ray players are coming out next month.

And bearing in mind the Playstation 3 will have a blu-ray player built in, it could get messy.

I hope HD-DVD win, because we don't want Sony to control dvds, just look what they did with cds

Bump :D

The winner will be LG when they get their dual-format players down to a reasonable level.

One major thing HD-DVD has going for it is that it has "DVD" branding on its side.

People know 'DVD', people love 'DVD' and I think "HD-DVD" as a format name has a massive advantage over EVD and even over Blue-Ray. As long as they can get them out, into the shops in larger numbers then I feel it might be a good bet.

But as David points out....LG have said they have developed a dual format player which, if proves popular, might only drag out the format war even longer....

We (the consumer) always get screwed around when what they call 'experimental technologies' are put onto the market.

re the PS3..have you looked at the spec sheet and actually used one???

It's amazing and worth every dollar.

I looked at the PS3 earlier this week at work, and it feels cheap, the plastics look cheap. Not a high-quality product. For £400, I would expected to see the top made from polished aluminium.

I haven't heard much from the "Enhanced Versatile Disc" format.

A little bit off the thread Topic but....

Yes. I noticed how very cheap the PS3 feels. That's one thing which I am quite suprised at.

And Honestly....I would actually feel pretty let down if I had blown £425 + a game or two (so £500+) on the console.

I mean, it really does feel like junk. I'm not saying the PS3 is junk exactly but man it's not something of beauty.

Although knowing Sony, they probably made the PS3 a bit cheap and ugly to hold so that they can release a second version - so that they can try and make back some of the money they lose on every PS3 sale.

It's like that with the XBOX 360 too - Micro$oft only make money from software and peripheral sales.

That's the price Micro$oft and Sony are willing to pay in the attempt to be seen as the market leaders.

And that's another thing - in terms of sales Nintendo actually are a fair bit ahead in the new console race. And Nintendo don't run their console sales at a loss either.

Who voted for "Portable Read-Only Hardrives"?

I think they are a good idea, hard-drives are coming down in price all the time, so a small hard-drive which is large enough to hold a film plus extras can be created, connected to a player via USB, and it will play.

The Nintendo Wii (and DS) are good machines.

^^It was not me,i dont see that ever taking off!

Bad news everybody, Sony's almost won :(

Cue price-rises for everything Blu-Ray related, more region encoding, more updates so that only the PS3 and Sony's own-brand Blu-Ray players can be updated to play the latest features on the new discs. (That has already happened, come July all blu-ray players pre November 2007 apart from the PS3 won't play new discs due to upgrade from 1.0 to 1.1)

Blu-ray supporters scent victory

However it won't be as popular as DVDs, down to the fact that the leap from VHS to DVD was a great leap forward in terms of technology and picture quality for only a modest price (new dvd player, can be used in original TV without problems), the leap from DVDs to Blu-Ray isn't worth the investment, as well as paying out for the player, you will have to pay out for a new Telly, new sound system and new cables in order to get the best out of the High-Def.

But then again, Pal is better than NTSC for colour.
