CIA closes unit for capturing bin Laden

Jerusalem Post | July 4 2006

The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) closed the unit charged with catching Osama bin Laden and his senior deputies, The New York Times reported on Tuesday.

Established in 1996 and known as "Alec Station," the unit was dismantled at the end of 2005 and its employees reassigned in the CIA Counter-terrorist Center; however, its dissolution was publicly announced only recently.

The decision was a milestone for the agency and indicates a significant change in perspective regarding bin Laden's place in Al Qaida in particular and in the international terrorist infrastructure in general.

Whereas the belief until now was that Al Qaida was a purely hierarchical organization and that killing off its leader would put an end to its activity, the new reality required the agency to change its assumptions.

Currently, the CIA's main concern is small, scattered terrorist groups which, although influenced by Al Qaida, operate entirely independently and don't receive their instructions directly from bin Laden.

Senior CIA members emphasized that catching bin Laden is still a priority, and that closing the unit does not signify the total neglect of that goal.

"The efforts to find Osama bin Laden are as strong as ever," said CIA spokeswoman Jennifer Millerwise Dyck. "This is an agile agency, and the decision was made to ensure greater reach and focus."

I only wish we could see proof of bin ladens workings, if they are so sure.

Of course there not gonna catch laden. people will think the war on terrorism is over once he's caught. so the goverments not going to catch him

Hmmm, well, I'm not 100% sure but I have read and heard many times that people believe him to be already dead. Prehaps even before September 2001.

This is thought to be why he truly looks like someone else in the so-called "confession tape". I mean it has to be someone else in that video.....I'm just looking at it now again....somethings not right.

Now, I know this goes against the release of 'his videos' - but what seems like a new video is actually just new audio with older video footage.

So, I'm not going with this one 100% but maybe around 70-80%.

no way he was dead before 911. in his videos he talks about current stuff and 911. now its quite possible he is dead now. but i dont think so, i think he's either in iran or pakistan. but i do know the goverment needs him alive or for the people to believe he is alive.

you're right on one thing... terrorism won't end when they catch him... it will never end. Silly for people to think that it will..... ever.

Ideas like that will never end. but we can make it better. like nazism its never going to go away yet its not as big anymore since the fall of hitler.

easy for you to say..... you're not a minority.

How the fuck does that have anything to do with me not being a minority?

because for some us.... we do still experience the stupidity of prejudices and racism on a daily. Sure it isn't as extreme as the Hitler days... but its still just as shameful.

I was pointing out that we cannot defeat an idea, BUT we can do things to make it not as popular. One example, the example i chose was Nazism. Because its was very big at one time in Germany but now days it is alot smaller, compared to back in the 30's and 40's.. Oh and you seem to think just because someone is white people arent racist agaisnt them......

And it's not very logical to launch a military assault for the War on Racism...

Did ANYONE say ANYTHING about launching a military assault on racism?
