Possible virus in my registry question..

Featured Replies

so a while back I was getting this stupid winAntiVirus crap pop up on my laptop.. and I took it to my IT guy at work and it was all better...

months later.. its has returned..:(

I get this pop up that tells me to 'add/remove' programs and when I close the window.. another one pops up.. and it says that I need to scan for some crap.. yadda yadda yadda.. I close that window.. and then something redirect a current IE window I may have open and it takes me to some wierd 'scan your computer screen'... its all in a IE window... I'll try to take screen caps when I get home....

anyhoo... my IT guy looked at it again.. we've scanned with AdAware, Spybot, and my Norton Antivirus.. and it all comes up clean. he says that it hides in my registry... then he removes it.. but it reappears... :(

anyone have any ideas and what can I do? Am I screwed here... please tell me no!!

help.

Hum.... have you done all those scans in safety mode?If you didn't, try that.

And I suggest you getting a new antivirus.

Norton destroyed my computer, slow... and it didn't catch a single virus. I'm using Kaspersky and I highly recommend it.

Anyways, I recommend you to get this program. It's called Regseeker. You download the program, install it and when running click only in "Clean the Registry". Then delete all the entries.

I think you should give this a try. Hopefully it'll work.

Do you have a firewall? If you don't you should get one. Either ZoneLabs or Sygate have free firewalls to download.

;)

Thanks! I'll try this out and let you know what happens. ;) I have a firewall.. but the standard one that comes with the Windows SP2... crap huh?

:(

I'd recommend other one, at least you're more protected. Let me know how it goes! ;)

I haven't d/l'd the stuff you guys recommended but.. I just wanted to share this with you... :)

Try this link

http://forums.techguy.org/security/453671-sysprotect-blackworm-winantiviruspro.html

or google "sysprotect".

The programs you need to try get rid of are "SysProtect, Blackworm, and WinAntiVirusPro 2006". It is from spyware know as "Virtumonde - aka Winfixer".

If you get this spyware resolved, I highly recommend that you discontinue using Internet Explorer as your main internet browser.

I use Mozilla Firefox as my main internet browser. It is a free download from,

http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

Let me know if you need any more help. I fix spyware for my friends' computers all the time.

^Oooh that sounds exactly like what I have! So I should get rid of my Spybot as well?

I use to get that WinFixer thing all the time.. but then the IT guy fixed it.. now its this crap.. :(

thank you thank you thank you!!

I'll try this when I get home tonight.... ;) I'll keep you posted...

1 - Get rid of Norton, on account that's it is crap

2 - Get a proper firewall, on account that the windows firewall is so piss easy to hack

3 - Dump IE, getting Opera or Firefox instead

4 - Do a complete backup of your hard-drive onto an external hard-drive or something else, then do a complete re-format of your hard-drive, and start with a fresh install of windows xp (assuming you got a proper windows xp disc).

Task 4 should clear your system, and you will notice how fast the computer goes after a complete re-format with all the crap removed.

Dave S basically solved it for you.

To prevent this from happening again:

-DON'T download from P2P programs (limewire, kazaa, anything like that)

-ONLY download from sites you trust (rapidshare)

-Get some better virus programs too... Norton sucks.

And finally, get a Mac!

Well I was reading stuff, you can still get viruses on Macs if you do what you do what you do on an XP machine. To be really safe, go Linux

Macs are probably just as vulnerable now that they have pc components... right?

^Oooh that sounds exactly like what I have! So I should get rid of my Spybot as well?

Both 'Spybot- Search and Destroy' and 'Lavasoft's Ad-Aware' are respected and trustworthy programs that fight spyware.

Another decent anti-spyware program is Bazooka,

http://www.kephyr.com/spywarescanner/index.html

This link will help you discover which anti-spyware programs you can trust,

http://spywarewarrior.com/

I also use Peerguardian 2,

http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/

This program blocks your computer from connecting to known bad i.p.'s (spyware, ads, anti-P2P, etc.).

If you do switch over to Mozilla Firefox, Adblock helps keep unwanted ads from appearing as well.

http://adblock.mozdev.org/

Are you running all of these programs in safe mode? I recommend doing that.

Restart your computer,

and then keep tapping the "F8" button.

It should prompt for how you want Windows to boot up.

Select "Safe Mode".

Then run your anti-spyware and anti-virus programs.
