Jack
Right... I'm sure there's a lot of big PC people out here (I'm one myself) but I just wanna get some opinions on this. My computer isn't great, and I want to just make it faster. I'm upgrading the RAM in it but I wanna know if anyone has any solutions to how to make my computer faster. I'll listen to ANY solutions. :D
Black Rose
New (Faster) Processor could help.
Jack
Any in particular? Any amounts of RAM you think would be good enough?
Black Rose
What computer do you have. What are it's stats (Ram, Hard-drive, Processor Speed, Age)
Jack
256 RAM, 40gig HD, 1.7GHz, and 2 and a half years. Buying a new computer is out of the question. Edit: I feel like a geek for knowing that without looking it up...
Black Rose
"Buying a new computer is out of the question." Damn, that was what i was going to suggest doing;) Add another stick of 256 Ram if you have enough room.
Black Rose
And you could do a complete re-format of your hard-drive with a new installation of XP, that would make it go faster
Jack
Well I was thinking about getting a gig of RAM and reformatting yeah. I haven't reformatted in too long so it's about due. Any types in regards to processor. Anything is better than Celeron....
Black Rose
No idea about processors. All I know is that when i built this pc, is that i left quite a bit of room for upgrading when the time comes.
Jack
Yeah I know mine has about 3 empty slots for sticks. The only question is whether I get a 1gig stick of RAM or two 512s.
huntjd
get a 1 gig. when u upgrade later you'll be gratful you'll have space available. also if ur motherboard is compatible buy a high spec p4. intel are gonna make their new chips soon... so maybe wait till they come out on all pc's then get the old p4's cheap

Black Rose
Or do what i did and go away from Intel. Get an AMD 64bit processor, ready for the next generation :)
huntjd
yeah lol. or do that. AMD's are generally better for games etc.
Sir Sausagedog
His board wouldn't be compatible with one of the more modern Intel CPU's maybe a Pentium for C at most, so upgrading to a newer CPU is out of the question. In Australia you'd have trouble finding the A or B classed chips, so you'll likely have the same trouble in the UK. You MIGHT be able to get a 2nd hand Pentium 4 2.4 GHZ C which will work in your motherboard if your are lucky, I can't be sure what limitation's you'll have with processors etc unless you quote your motherboard model + brand :P If you don't know it, use this program. If you do know it, use this program too, it will tell you about what kinda of socket your processor uses and whether you have RAMBUS RAM or whatnot. http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-135.zip Post with the info when you're done please, cause the stats you put down for Dave don't really tell anyone anything, they only allow for approximation :( If you have one of the earlier motherboards it may support RAMBUS RAM instead of DDR. if this is the case, I'd forget about upgrading anything and save for a new motherboard, processor, RAM and graphics card, it's pointless buying obselete products such as RAMBUS. Got any questions, PM me :P
