Don't look away?

Featured Replies

Yep...there are those situations in life when you actually don't want to see the thnigs you see...because of being scared....or because you don't know what to do......and you just look away....or you say you didn't see it!

For example:

You are sitting at your window....there is this person on the street....suddenly the person falls on the ground...and seems to collapse or somethnig like that....

Do you run outside and help the person (for example with first aid...)?

or do you go to another room...just not to see it....and you hope for somebody else to help this person...because you are scared of doing somethnig wrong...or something like that?

:stunned:

Now that I've written this I see how stupid it is....I mean...I seriously would go to another room....not that I'm a bad human being....but i don't know why...mnaybe I am scared of something...but no this stupid...because I could at least call somebody for help.....

My oh my...this is SAD!:(

it reminds me of World War II...................................

I see what you mean...

I think I couldn't help me to laugh... but if this person is an old one, I wouldn't cos it can be serious... she can be hurt...

I don't have the basic of first aid... so I couldn't do anything else than calling the ambulance...

But I couldn't do anything, as you cos I would be as scared as you to do sth wrong...

I know when I was little, if I broke something, I didn't say anything for fear of retribution.

I dunno how I would act in a situation like that, I'd like to think that I would help, but I honestly don't know.

Well..it reminds me of a situation I had two days ago.......I went to the baker and passed a house an old man from our village was "standing" in front of with his wheel chair...

it looked as if he tried to ring the doorbell...I don't know what he was doing there...he is still able to walk but not that well anymore....

so when I came back from the baker he was still standing in front of the door.....I thought "Hmmm...maybe he needs help..."....so I walked faster....

damn I don#t know what it is.....

maybe it is because I could never imagine to work in a nursing home or a hospital...I could never do that...I so much admire those people who work there..

I know when I was little, if I broke something, I didn't say anything for fear of retribution.

I feel the same. I know what the right thing to do is, but I just don't know if I could actually do it.

It reminds of this one time my sister and I were walking down this street downtown. Just as we approached, a man started swaying and fell back. He seemed out of it, and then he began bleeding from his mouth... he muttered "i need help" and tried to get up, but he couldn't.

Some people were crowding around trying to see what happened, and others just walked by as if they didn't notice anything. Only a bit after did someone reach down by his side, tried to help him and called for an ambulance.

I really didn't know how to act....... all I did was walk by slowly and glancing back to situation......

Who would run into another room?

seriously... seriously

What does it take from you to lend a hand?

And don't think I am saying this just because its easy to be all " virtual answer I don't have to prove"

I am saying this because I have. Maybe not in a small scale like a collapsed person, but in a large scale when hurricanes hit I do my part. And if that means digging out people's ditches or put shingles on a roof, or feed/clothe them..then I would and have.

I know lending a hand when someone is in need is maybe, of no recompense to me, but who cares? What makes people cowards?

If I saw somebody collapsing under my window i'd probably tell my mom or anybody else... I would try at least but I doubt I'd just go out and help. What can I do alone anyway? Just stand near this person and watch at him? I'm not a doctor and I can't do anything. Adults can call emergency and all so I'd call them over.

But sometimes I really try to pretend that I don't see some things. Don't know... Just because I don't wanna do something I can regret about later.... Like, it's always easier to just pass by than stop and start thinking what to do. I should change it... Or not. I don't know if it's bad or not.

Well...maybe I've chosen a bad example....but I hope people still get what I mean anyways....and in some situations it really is like that with me...I don#t know why...

well, in that case, if the person was alone and no one noticed then I would call for help, an ambulance. But if someone was with that person, (husband, wife, friend etc etc) and I see they are doing somethingl like calling somewhere on their cellphone then I wouldnt try to help, just because I know someone is already doing something for that person.

i used to be someone who ignored the fact that others might need help..

however... i remember the day when my friend and i went to school because of a celebration and we walked down the street and suddenly heard someone falling.

we turned around and it was my friend's old, weird neighbour. you know... he was an alcoholic and... not working anymore.

we ran back to him and helped him up. (that was about 4 years ago... so i was 11).

just picture that NOBODY helped him except us. we were trying to help him up again. two 11-year-olds! and there were stronger adults passing us...

he fell on his bag, which contained a bottle of wine...

finally someone helped us. it was a woman with a buggy... O.o

that moment showed me that no other person would've helped, if we weren't there!

and... now... imagine that it was you falling down or collapsing! wouldn't you want someone to help you and not to look away and keep walking?!

well, sometime it makes me think when ppl needs help but i dunno whether i should help them or not

cos i dunno what should i do as if it's wrong to help them

i'm totally understand your case eventhough that never happen to me

Yeah. I'd over think, and remember that I'm just one person who doesn't know how to make someone return to their concious, and i wouldn't know if what I'm doing helps them or not (i.e. if someone fell down a flight of stairs, I know I shouldn't touch them because that could cause more damage) so I guess the best is to call for help.

But in my situation above... there were a lot of people around but it took so long for someone to actually get the initiative to call an ambulance....

i'd probably help them. i'm a lifesaver in summer so i know first aid and cpr. i would be nervous about having to have the life of someone else in my hands rather than anything else.
