Woman flies to UK with cat in hand luggage

An investigation is under way after a major airport security blunder allowed a woman to travel 2,800 miles with a cat in her hand luggage.

The woman, who has not been named, travelled on two planes on her journey from Iran to Newcastle via Amsterdam.

The kitten was only discovered at the end of her journey by customs officials at Newcastle Airport, who asked to look inside the box she was carrying. The cat, named Tiger, is now in quarantine where it will remain for the next six months.

The incident comes just weeks after security at UK airports was tightened up after an alleged terror plot to blow up jets in mid-air came to light. A major probe is now under way as to how the woman managed to travel with the cat without airport staff spotting it.

The woman flew from Tehran airport in Iran last Saturday to Amsterdam's Schipol Airport where she caught a KLM flight to Newcastle - where the kitten was finally discovered.

The woman told customs officials she didn't think she'd done anything wrong, although angry passengers say the incident makes a mockery of the UK's stringent baggage restrictions if people can fly in with such items from abroad.

KLM confirmed the woman flew from Amsterdam to Newcastle.

A spokesman for the airline told the Sun: "When checking in for her flight, the passenger did not inform KLM staff she was carrying a pet so the animal went undetected."

A Customs official added that an inquiry into the incident is under way.

The wolves are running;)

I guess she didn't want to leave her kitten in Iran to face the bombing alone.

apparently there was confusion over different animal laws across EU countries.

Airline KLM said the kitten had passed through an x-ray scanner, but Dutch security staff may not have known about the UK's strict quarantine laws.
