Who could possibly be mean enough to attack the angelic frontman of the world’s most inoffensive band - Coldplay? Well someone’s got to do it. I recognise that he’s an all-round Lovely Bloke who really wants the world to live in peace and harmony. Unfortunately he’s doing a pretty good job of ensuring that this won’t be possible.

Let me begin by admitting that almost every environmentalist I know - and I include myself - is a hypocrite. We all want people to live by codes rather stricter than those we apply to ourselves, which is why real action on climate change isn’t possible without intervention by the government. But Chris is in a league of his own.

In an interview for the Guardian conducted in Las Vegas in 2005, he spoke about the songs on his album X&Y.

Twisted Logic is an intense, angry track encouraging people to make the right decisions about how they live their lives and how they treat the planet.

A few paragraphs later, he revealed that he was about to fly by private jet to Palm Springs, 35 minutes from Las Vegas. The band can now afford to fly wherever possible, and the increased privacy and speed mean that Apple will be able to join her father on tour more often. “I certainly don’t want her to stay at home all the time,” Martin says. “As she gets older, hopefully she’ll come out as and when she wants. I always thought it’d be cool to be in school and say, ‘I’m not coming in today - I’m off to Costa Rica to see my dad play.’ I do think that wins you a few points.”(1)

The following week, Alison Goldfrapp told an interviewer that, during his tours, Chris flies home between gigs. “We supported Coldplay and Chris Martin used to fly home on his jet, go home, write songs then fly to the next gig. “I thought, ‘What? Are you insane?’”(2)

As Goldfrapp suggested, his trips back “home” (this could be one of a number of places) were plainly unnecessary. While the rest of the tour hopped from gig to gig, he must have travelled twice or even three times as far. But even if it was absolutely essential, for some reason, that he went back to Gwyneth and Apple and Mangosteen, why couldn’t he travel in a commercial plane?

None of the accounts I have read give the make of his jet, but I will assume it’s that standard celebrity vehicle, the Learjet 45. The reports suggest that even if he is not the sole passenger, he is the sole beneficiary of the journey: those who travel with him - minders, servants or crew - go only for his convenience. So I will place the plane’s carbon emissions on his account.

The Learjet 45 has a normal cruising speed of 846 kmph. Its fuel consumption at this speed is 579 litres/hour, which means it burns 0.68 litres of kerosene per kilometre(3). The Airbus A321, a standard medium-haul commercial plane, travels at 853kmph and uses 3000 litres per hour, or 3.52 litres per kilometre(4). It seats around 189 people. Assuming that average occupancy is 70%, or 132, then every passenger is responsible for burning 0.027 litres per kilometre, or one 25th of Chris Martin’s consumption. But, as Heat shows, even one return trip across the Atlantic on a commercial airliner equates to a person’s entire sustainable carbon ration for a year.

It’s probably fair to assume that he flies at least 100,000 miles (or ten return journeys averaging 10,000 miles each) in his private jet each year. If so - and even before taking the rest of his activities into account - he would be exceeding his fair share of carbon by 250 times. If we were to take the other climate changing effects of air travel into account, we would multiply this by 2.7 times.

As if to prove that making the right decisions about how to treat the planet really is for lesser mortals, in December 2005 Chris Martin pranged his car, whereupon we learnt that the model he drives is a BMW X5. This is one of the thirstiest 4×4s on the road. The US Environmental Protection Agency reveals that in cities (he rammed someone’s hatchback in Belsize Park in London) they manage just 16 miles to the gallon(5).

Chris Martin claims to care about the poorest people on earth. Why then does he seem to be mounting a one-man campaign to sweep them off the planet?

man this person has way too much time on their hands, id like to see this person in chris's position. if i had a little daughter and i spent so much time away from her man id tke flights back home to see her. and im sure he wouldnt be the only person on the flight, if i was part of the crew i would want to go home. plus where did they get the information, that they travel all the time on a private jet. they travel on te tour bus when they are travelling the states...

i dont have time for people like these...

i remember reading this. honestly, people like to find fault in good people, especially if they are famous.

he should've stopped there and read what chris, and coldplay in general, have done with their fame by promoting worthy causes of fair trade and planting trees to make up for the emissions they make etc etc.

this guy needs to look at the bigger picture and open up his narrow mind before attacking chris

What a pointless waste of time.

Besides, I don't think Chris ever did that. In the first place, that plane isn't his or even the band's, it's EMI's. He can't just walk aboard and order that he be taken to London once a day or something like that. And second of all, if I'm not mistaken, most of the time Chris was on tour his family was with him, were they not?

I just got the lamest PM ever.

Subject: Big H

Nice drawing' date=' 1 hour! impressive. If you'd have put a massive 'H' for hypocrite on his forehead it might have been more accurate;) . I used to really like Coldplay, now Chris Martin seems false. Check it out:stunned: : http://www.turnuptheheat.org/?page_id=16

He makes out that he cares to sell records, a glamourous silk tounged business man. Don't mean to sound sanctimonious, just want to throw some dirt on golden boy Chris.

Noah.

That shouldn't of made me pissed off, but it did.

I just got the lamest PM ever.

That shouldn't of made me pissed off, but it did.

:shocked2: These people need to get out a little! Coldplay do a lot more good than bad...

I don't have anytime for them either so I won't waste my enegy attacking them. They're not worth it...

I just got the lamest PM ever.

That shouldn't of made me pissed off, but it did.

It wasn't just you. I received exactly the same PM. He probably sent it to everyone.

of course, seeing Apple is such a sin! Wow. Chris sucks big time for wanting to spend time with his family.

Plus, is dissing Chris all this guy has to do all day? Because maybe he shouldn't take it to a coldplay fan forum.

waste of time.they're forgetting that Chris is human.besides who's saint.

waste of time.they're forgetting that Chris is human.besides who's saint.

Roger Moore??

Or Ian St. John??

of course' date=' seeing Apple is such a sin! Wow. Chris sucks big time for wanting to spend time with his family.[/quote']

I mean, honestly, what guy does that? God, Chris. Learn the rules of the world. It's just unacceptable to be a family man these days!

It seems this guy really only wanted to target Chris Martin's jet. Um, hi, who cares?!

Not really worth getting worked up about. As long as Chris Martin continues to inspire me and be my hero, I don't care what others think. :]

I got the PM too. Good on Ian for posting the article publicly since Noah couldn't be bothered. I don't usually reply to messages like that, because they only lead to arguements. But I did tell Noah that if he cares about the world so much, he should spend his time joining a cause, signing a petition or just wishing a friend a good day instead of joining forums just to spam their members. Frankly, Chris does alot of good with his money, and he can spend it however he likes!

Greenwash - the truth hurts, doesn't it?

It would seem that none of you know that the 'guy' who wrote the greenwash article about Chris is a very very smart person. You should check out his website - www.monbiot.com - and learn a little before you dismiss his article. He doesn't spend all his time obsessing over Chris' behavior but he does spend a lot of time trying to encourage people to action around global warming, world poverty, the environment, challenging unaccountabe corporate control and corrupt government. However much we like Chris, we mustn't let him - or ourselves - be hypocritical. Chris is in a prime situation to set a real example, but only seems to talk the talk rather than walk the walk. Like Bono (who, along with the other members of U2 have recently moved their assest out of Ireland because the Irish tax laws have changed from very low taxes for all artists to very low taxes only for struggling artists - how's that for good civic behaviour), he needs to be held as accountable for what he says he does even more than people who are not in a position to influence others. If he tells me to care about the environment, why should I listen if he won't do that himself? It's a bit of a rip-off to think he's trading on my concerns (the environment), making me like him because he says he cares, when he doesn't really.

Just because you like someone doesn't mean you can't be objective. Challenging people important to us means actually means we care more than if we just let them do shit and not complain.

I read the article and aknowledge the writer as being intelligent...and caring about the planet.

I just think it's still a waste of one's time creating accounts just to single out members of a forum. Let's face it. Most of us are going to read everything with Chris or Coldplay's name on it. And most of us have already read and discussed this article and others like it. There are a couple of threads on the board about Bono as well.

Sure, you can do it if you want. It's a free country. But there are better ways to help the planet!!

Just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD. But thanks for having the maturity to express these views publicly, instead of PMing a few people.

as much as I love chris and I alwasy stand for him when people criticized him for trying to change the world,if this is true.. I completely agree with the author... yes, he wants to see apple but sincerely... tehre´s millions of working fathers in the world who dont have the time to see their kids all the time and nobody has died becuase of that...

...Zu

Aw, I think your own family is your number one priority. Kids can't just grow up on their own... they do in a way, but... y'know. Children are the future, as they say. :) Of course, that's just my opinion though... I never really spend time with my parents, even though they're always around, and I'm a pretty messed up kid--my sister pretty much raised me, and my sister has had to deal with a lot of crap because my parents really never payed attention to her.

Take care of the world around you and your own life before you take care of the rest of the world. That sounds kinda selfish, but how would we all function if we didn't care about our own problems/issues/responsiblities and tried to help others? We'd be pretty outta wack, IMO.

"Take the plank out of your own eye before taking the splinter out of your neighbor's."

:nice:

edit: and NO, this opinion wasn't formulated just cuz Chrissypoo loves his kids so much he wants to visit them all the time, haha.

I´m not saying he should not care about his family.. of course it has to be a priority to be with your kids and everything, but you cannot say: I care about my family and fuck eveything else. This eviroment thing is not only because "of the good of the world". If we dont care about the planet, the day of tomorrow Apple and other kids will have to use an oxigen mask or never see the light of the sun because of the pollution and the lack of ozone.... I guess that´s the main problem with many of us in this world, we do think that as long as we are ok and we are not affected by such a problems, it doesnt matter, but IT DOES, and someone like chris, who has travelled to another parts of the world, should know it.

Zu

Okay... my whole point is that I think this is understandable... sure he might be completely blowing his carbon share outta proportion... (but we don't even know if he actually travelled back home in between gigs to London all the time, like FrostbitePanda said, and others have said Apple and Gwyn follow Chris on tour--they were at the concert I was at. :uhoh:).

Well, even if he does take a ride in his jet every day, he's married, a father, apart of one of the biggest bands, if not the biggest band in the world right now. He's got a lot of junk to deal with. I think he's a good person overall (I don't know Chris, but, hey, I've got an impression). I don't think it's worth the author's time to write this article--I think Chris really does care about the poorest people on the earth. He and the band have exposed millions of people to the Make Trade Fair campaign as well as others, and it's a bit sad that his motives are questioned just because of his friggin' transportation.

Bottom line is that he's got good intentions... I'm not saying that we shouldn't care what someone does just because their intentions are good, but I swear... this article makes Chris seem kinda evil.

edit: uhh... I'm gonna stop--no one is going to agree with me probably because I don't even know if I'm expressing my opinions properly at 1 AM, haha.

Amen to that! Nobodys perfect.

Afternote: Crap double post...

THe road to hell etc...

I'm defending Chris, but I want to be fair to the author...it's obvious he cares too, and that he's not just slagging Chris off for no reason. He's taken the time to do the math, and I'm sure if Chris knew the consequences of his actions, he'd find a better way to do what he has to do...if there is one.

THere's so much scrutiny placed on ppl like Bono, and organizations like Oxfam right now, that it's important to remember the importance of the message more than the messangers! Just a thought...

I know what you mean Alysa, I wasn´t saying chris is evil or anything...

and you are right Tracie about the first part you wrote, but the truth is, many people will just find out about these organizations because of the "messangers" not the message..

Also, to expect we do "as he says not as he does" is completely stupid, if you know what I mean.

Again, I love chris, and I really think he´s very passionate and cares about what he promotes, but if this is true he really should be more careful about what he does...

oh well, we all love coldplay rigght?

get me away, I´m dying:zu
