Chris against the planet

Featured Replies

Hi,

I don't know if you are aware, but Chris Martin flies at least 100 000 miles in his private jet each year - this corresponds to emitting over 250 times the quantities of carbon dioxide which each of us should emit in order to prevent devastating climate change this century!

Chris Martin claims to care for the poorest people of the planet; however, climate change will affect the poorest people first. This is very hypocrytical and I am very disappointed in how unethical he is!

Anna:(

...

After countless people have posted the same thing over and over (or you could be the same person, iono) this still ticks me off.

"Oh man, Chris uses a private jet! He is soooo AGAINST the planet and soooo unethical!"

It's like saying that people who like animals can't eat meat.

Ok, what the fuck is up with the spammers who post these retarded pointless things on coldplay fansites? Seriously, what exactly do you want us to do about it? Go to Chris Martin's house and tell him he's a horrible person? Or stop liking Coldplay?

Seriously. Get. A. Life.

It's like saying that people who like animals can't eat meat.

yeah that's very similar. i love all animals but i don't see myself ever become a vegetarian.

this information about chris and his jet is not new and has been posted so many times. please search for those threads before making new ones.

By the way Kathy I saw your desktop picture on the thread about what is on people's desktops and I have it as my desktop right now :D

lol yay spread the coldplay love! thanks for that anna banana :)

well.. so everyone would have to use boats... or swim trough the ocean.. or just walk around the world? :freak:

^

lol yay spread the coldplay love! thanks for that anna banana :)

Well it is a great desktop.

(In case nobody has noticed I am trying to turn this thread into something positive)

I'll gladly burn all of my Coldplay CDs if you give me proof that 4381738219 of other million/billionaires don't do that and more.

Besides... all Chris wants to do is single-handedly destroy the planet by riding in a private jet (That he doesn't own, nor control) inbetween shows every night crossing several timezones to visit a famil that's already on tour with him on the plane that is supposed to be for touring ONLY.

Fuck Bush. Fuck Castro. Fuck Kim Jong Il. Fuck the evil creatures running Sudan. It's all about Chris Martin man. He's the REAL evil mastermind.

You have it all figured out man. Congrats.

I am saying that Chris Martin in a hypocrit - you can't pretent to care about these issues if you use a private jet 3 times a week! If he has to travel so frequently, using a commercial aircraft would save on tonnes of carbon emissions.

The threat from climate change is extremely serious and will affect everyone. If nothing is done in 30 year, it will be too late. Drought, wars, hurricanes will be normal. People need to think about this and try to curb their air travel - or at least use a commercial jet if you're Chris Martin.

If Chris Martin is aware that his fans know of his plights, maybe he will think of changing.

Anna

So, what he sould do? Travelling with a horse?

It's ridicoulous...Chris is the most sensible person i know, so i don't think your consideration can be considered right...I think that someone gave too noise and too importance to this fact...and, if i remember well, Coldplay planted forests and trees, they approve the alternative energy sources, and they are proud to be in Save The Planet project...so, why you want to see only this facts and not the several actions that Coldplay and Chris Martin did and do now for our planet?

P.S. Even the energy to write your message above makes trouble for the planet! So...next time, don't write!

so from what I've read from this topic coldplay is anti enviroment(not) , so do you want for Coldpaly to go to the american continent just by a wind boat?or what?it's not theyre fault cas they use a plane...its the goverments foult cas they don't want to use hidrogen power...

  • Author

Sorry - but hydrogen power is not feasible for aircrafts at present. There is a lot of reserach going into alternative aviation fuel (my PhD is in this area), but it is not technologically sound yet.

So, if we want to keep our planet alive - WE ALL MUST REDUCE OR AIRCRAFT USAGE. I am glad that Chris Martin is doing something for the planet by planting trees etc - but if he doesn't reduce his air travel, this counteracts all the good things he has done. He should only take essential flights - not fly home between gigs. And when he does fly - he should use a commercial jet to reduce the impact.

We all have to face the facts about climate change - and sacrifices need to be made. Just because you are in a band, it doesn't mean you have the right to pollute 250 times more than everyone else!

Dude, you wanna save the world?

There's a bunch of better things for you to do than whine about Chris Martin riding his private jet (that could not even be his, and that he maybe doesn't even use inbetween gigs--you know, that only has one meesly quote from one person that backs that whole thing up).

^ anna, i get that you want us to know this, and like i posted earlier, this isn't new news. chris has done more for the environment than most people, so the fact he takes 2 steps forward and half a step back isn't worth getting upset about. :dozey:

clearly you just registered, surely you are more interested in the music, the band itself, the numerous good causes coldplay have accomplished rather than highlighting the very few negative issues associated with the band members - are you even a fan?

Well she's new and against it. Maybe she's a world saver. But well okay Chris has to work also on the nature, everyone has. But nobody does, i bet you don't do it also.

And the technologie is running further with new discoveries so it's gonna be allright.

Last we had also this discussion right ?

everybody is contaminating the planet,, not just chris  ...

Yes, everyone has to work on it - that is definately true. I am not saying Chris is the only one, but he is emitting a whole lot more than necessary - around 250 times more than the average person. He should set a good example so other stars will follow him if he really cares about the environment like he says he does.

I think he would listen to his fans if they let him know their thoughts on this matter. Does ANYONE agree with me there?

I will agree with you once you give me a refrence that is more substantial than the flimsy quote of a drugged up pop star through a music tabloid that has been known to be very fictious and another "interview" in yet another notorius tabliod.

I just love how you take one quote like that, and then automatically assume that not only that it's true, but that he alone flew 100,000 miles in total and emitting 250 times more carbon than an average person. How the hell do you figure that? (Please don't tell me.... I'll just laugh)

Here are my reasons for assuming it's not true:

1) The band was given a private jet by EMI, their record lable. It is in no way, shape or form, theirs. That jet was for touring purposes only[/]b. Now... tell me how Chris Martin, a man that does not personally own the jet in any way, does not pay the pilots/crew, nor does he pay for the evil fule that goes inside, can POSSIBLY convince EMI (His boss, bassically) that he needs to fly from, let's say Sweden, across three (Or more) timezones to arrive back to London, possibly stay for only a few hours before he has to return for a gig and then fly somewhere else for another gig. How exactly does that work?

2) Also, you fail to realize that his family were with him almost 85% of the time whilst he was on tour.

3) There's an interview Chris had an interview with Andrew Denton. He talks about the jet and says they only get it for very special instances.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWG6Z-GEeVU

4) Contact Music is a tabliod. Do you know how much stuff tabliods make up? Especially quote-wise? Lisa has probably never even spoken to Contact Music before in her life. That's like that "interview" that Chris did with The Sun after he got married to Gwyn. It was entirely fabricated. Chris doesn't do interviews with The Sun, and niether to a majority of celeberties. Contatct Music's main motive for making a quote like that up is that they heard that Coldplay have a jet for touring and to further illustrate their wealth, they made something up about Lisa Goldfrapp. A tabliod like that is not there to report facts like a Newspaper or 'Time', it's made to sell or to attract customers. Unfortunately for Chris, since he doesn't go out a do crazy shit or start fights or give the celeberity magazines stuff to talk about, the majority of the time they have to take what little information they have and run with it. Also bear in mind that Lisa rode in this jet, along with the majority of crew and family members with Coldplay. There's a picture of them all standing outside of it somewhere around here. She was opening for Coldplay, which is something you don't take lightly as a musical artist. She would never say anything against Chris or the band while she was touring with them. Not only is it disrespectful to a band who is allowing you to tour with them and get (basically) free exposure, but it makes for an ill touring environment.

...So yeah. I really wish people would think about things instead of jumping all over it and automatically beleiving it.

I hope you now turn your attentions to more worthwhile things. Like writing your senator (Or whatever governmental representative) to ask him to up funding for alternative fules and read-up on the amazing possiblities of nano technology and what it could mean for medicine and for the environment. Instead of not only beleiving a fallacy and presuing it and making it seems like it's actually a big deal. Even if it was true, there's very little you can do about it by posting in a Coldplay fan site.

I hope this is true, but in the interview with The Guardian (a top newspaper in England) the following came up.

He spoke about his new album - there’s “an intense, angry track encouraging people to make the right decisions about how they live their lives and how they treat the planet.”

A few paragraphs later, he revealed that he was about to fly by private jet to Palm Springs, 35 minutes from Las Vegas. The band can now afford to fly wherever possible, and the increased privacy and speed mean that Apple will be able to join her father on tour more often. “I certainly don’t want her to stay at home all the time,” Martin says. “As she gets older, hopefully she’ll come out as and when she wants. I always thought it’d be cool to be in school and say, ‘I’m not coming in today - I’m off to Costa Rica to see my dad play.’ I do think that wins you a few points.”

None of the accounts I have read give the make of his jet, but I will assume it’s that standard celebrity vehicle, the Learjet 45. The reports suggest that even if he is not the sole passenger, he is the sole beneficiary of the journey: those who travel with him - minders, servants or crew - go only for his convenience. So I will place the plane’s carbon emissions on his account.

The Learjet 45 has a normal cruising speed of 846 kmph. Its fuel consumption at this speed is 579 litres/hour, which means it burns 0.68 litres of kerosene per kilometre. The Airbus A321, a standard medium-haul commercial plane, travels at 853kmph and uses 3000 litres per hour, or 3.52 litres per kilometre. It seats around 189 people. Assuming that average occupancy is 70%, or 132, then every passenger is responsible for burning 0.027 litres per kilometre, or one 25th of Chris Martin’s consumption. But, as Heat shows, even one return trip across the Atlantic on a commercial airliner equates to a person’s entire sustainable carbon ration for a year.

It’s probably fair to assume that he flies at least 100,000 miles (or ten return journeys averaging 10,000 miles each) in his private jet each year. If so - and even before taking the rest of his activities into account - he would be exceeding his fair share of carbon by 250 times. If we were to take the other climate changing effects of air travel into account, we would multiply this by 2.7 times.

As if to prove that making the right decisions about how to treat the planet really is for lesser mortals, in December 2005 Chris Martin pranged his car, whereupon we learnt that the model he drives is a BMW X5. This is one of the thirstiest 4×4s on the road. The US Environmental Protection Agency reveals that in cities (he rammed someone’s hatchback in Belsize Park in London) they manage just 16 miles to the gallon.

Maybe he has changed since December 2005 - lets hope so.

By the way - I am actually researching into alternative clean fuels myself at the moment at Cambridge Univeristy. But I also believe raising awareness is this area is very important.

I'm sure Chris isn't being as responsible to the environment as he should be, i guess he can be a bit dumb at times flying all those miles on his private lear jet.

Maybe you should write to him personally and see if you get a response as I doubt he reads these forums!!

Hope this helps:)
