Urban Legends - true or false? fact or fiction?

Featured Replies

what is an urban legend?

Many people have heard the tale, occasionally alluded to in popular culture but more often imparted as a thing that "really happened to a friend of a friend," of the dotty grandmother who tried to dry off her damp poodle by placing it in the microwave oven. The dog exploded, sad to say, and Grandma has never been quite the same since.

That story isn't true, of course; it's an urban legend, circulating by word of mouth since the 1970s. It conveys a familiar moral message: new technologies can be a hazard, as well as a boon, to humankind (not to mention dogkind). Such an incident could have happened, but we have no real evidence that it did.

here's an example of one, scary/horror

the boyfriends death

As told by Isabel Espaldon, 02/06/00...

Here's a story my mom told to me and my friends when I was about seven years old. You can imagine I was scared to death...

A woman and her boyfriend were on their way home from somewhere (not important) one night, and suddenly his car ran out of gas. It was about one in the morning and they were completely alone in the middle of the nowhere.

The guy stepped out of the car, saying comfortingly to his girlfriend, "Don't worry, I'll be right back. I'm just going to go out for some help. Lock the doors, though."

She locked the doors and sat restlessly, waiting for her boyfriend to come back. Suddenly, she sees a shadow fall across her lap. She looks up to see... not her boyfriend, but a strange, crazed looking man. He is swinging something in his right hand. He sticks his face close to the window and slowly pulls up his right hand. In it is her boyfriend's decapitated head, twisted horribly in pain and shock. She shuts her eyes in horror and tries to make the image go away. When she opens her eyes, the man is still there, grinning psychotically. He slowly lifts his left hand, and he is holding her boyfriend's keys... to the car.

....and what's gotten under your cap?

i think some urban legends have some truth to them but the older they are the more they've had details added to them.

One of my favorites is about this certain college. The night before exams everyone is studying really hard and everyone's stressed out. It's a tradition for all the college students to scream as loud as they can at midnight to relieve some stress. And everytime that happens someone is murdered because no one could hear their individual screams... freaky :stunned:

I know another one:

baby mistaken for a turkey

the legend starts with a baby sitter. she arrives at the baby's house. the father introduces himself and escorts her to his wife and the baby. the mother gives the girl a list of do's and dont's and tries to maintain a smile throughout. she explains that the baby will be fine and alright. the father then escorts the mother outside, to leave for the party.

the baby sitter can now relax. she puts some music on to pass time. she is calm and reaches for her handbag. she gets some LSD tablets, a powerful drug. she takes them. she is now in her own world, carefree and calm. she sees lots of diffrent colors and shapes.

the mother phones homr to check how the baby is doing. the stter hears the phone and takes a while to answer it.

she askes how the baby is.

the babysitter tells her that the baby is fine and even put a turkey in the oven for dinner....

what? what turkey???

she is shocked and stunned.

the sitter hangs up the phone.

she continues with the infulence of LSD.

the mum and dad hurry home and arrive.

they enter, and immidiately askes about the baby. she doesnt repond.

the mother hurries up to the room and is shocked to see the cot empty

the father smells something coming from the kitchen and hrries to open the oven and makes a horrifing discovery....

the legend did not really happen but it continues to live on and evolve.

Kentucky Fried Hoax

January 2000

Another notice about potentially bad food that is totally fake.

Subject: KFC NOTICEKFC has been a part of our American traditions for many years. Manypeople, day in and day out, eat at KFC religiously. Do they really knowwhat they are eating? During a recent study of KFC done at the University of New Hampshire, they found some very upsetting facts.First of all, has anybody noticed that just recently, the company haschanged their name? Kentucky Fried Chicken has become KFC. Doesanybody know why? We thought the real reason was because of the "FRIED"food issue. It's not. The reason why they call it KFC is because they can not use the wordchicken anymore. Why? KFC does not use real chickens. They actually usegenetically manipulated organisms. These so called "chickens" are keptalive by tubes inserted into their bodies to pump blood and nutrientsthroughout their structure. They have no beaks, no feathers, and no feet.Their bone structure is dramatically shrunk to get more meat out of them. This is great for KFC because they do not have to pay so much for theirproduction costs. There is no more plucking of the feathers or the removal of the beaks and feet. The government has told them to change all of theirmenus so they do NOT say chicken anywhere. If you look closely you willnotice this. Listen to their commercials, I guarantee you will not see or hear the word chicken.I find this matter to be very disturbing. I hope people will start torealize this and let other people know. Please forward this message to as many people as you can. Together wemake KFC start using "Real" chicken again. Note from the Moderator:I had some kentucky "Fried Chicken" a few weeks ago and noticedfor quite some time but because when we are (hungry)we tend to ignoregood common sense. This is what I discovered:

1. An unusual amount of 'fat' under the skin

2. A high "grease" residue inside the skin that you could drain

3. The breast meat having a 'brown' as opposed to a "white" color4. A feeling of gastric distress after eating the chicken:o :shocked2: :stunned:
