The average office desktop harbours 400 times more bacteria than the average office toilet seat, according to new US research.

And women's work areas are much more germ-ridden than men's, thanks in part to their habit of stashing snacks in their drawers.

Makeup and hand lotions also helped transfer bacteria, as well as phones and handbags.

Women have three to four times the amount of germs in, on and around their desks, phones, computers, keyboards, drawers and personal items as men do, the study by University of Arizona professor Charles Gerba showed.

But worst overall offenders were men's wallets. "It's in your back pocket where it's nice and warm, it's a great incubator for bacteria," Prof Gerba told the Arizona Daily Star.

He found that 75 per cent of female employees kept food in their work area.

"I thought for sure men would be germier," the professor of soil, water and environmental sciences said.

"But women have more interactions with small children and keep food in their desks. The other problem is makeup.

"I was really surprised how much food there was in a woman's desk.

"If there's ever a famine, that's the first place I'll look for food."

Prof Gerba tested more than 100 offices at the university and in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oregon and Washington for the study commissioned by disinfectant maker Clorox.

I'm not monkeying around :P

I heard that one before :P

This is the first time Mark didn't surprise me.

So it is the latest "blah is more germier than a toilet seat" survey.

I have heard Keyboards, car steering wheels & door-handles have more germs on than toilet seats.

Amazing timing. I just cleaned my desktop this morning.
