"Best book you have ever read, thread"

^ hm me neither. the lord of the flies was the first book i read for senior school. didn't enjoy it, the book or the film. maybe because i had to read it and didn't just 'go with the flow'.

few classics would be to kill a mockingbird - SUCH a great novel, from start to finish, such a powerful story. therese racquin was really...hardcore. dark and intriguing, a great read. and my most recent read - finally, wuthering heights - just read it and you'll see why.

Yeah, maybe it was the fact that I HAD to read it for school. If I didn't have to, I have just read it casually without pressure, and have fun reading it.

I'm currently reading 'To Kill A Mockingbird', and so far I really like it. I've never liked a book I read for school except this book and 'The Outsiders'.

My fav is the one I'm reading at the moment:

"The Three Musketeers" - Alexander Dumas.

It's so the awesome, and he writes it so well.

Anything else by him is also great (i.e. Count of Monte Cristo)

1984 by George Orwell...and it scares me just how prophetic it's turned out to be. *shivers*

I have 1984 waiting for me in my bedroom right now..

I have been meaning to get to it.:smug:

I've read To Kill A Mockingbird at least six times.

Ha, my dad forced me to read it a few summers ago. That was the last time I complained to him about being bored. :P

I liked 1984 a lot too. It was very eerie.

But the book we're reading in school right now is "Things Fall Apart." by Chinua Achebe. It's pretty interesting, but it's not a feel- good book. :(

If the sig and avatar doesn't give it away, more than anything I'm a Tolkien fanatic. Lord of the Rings all the way. (And for the record, it was for years before the movies, too.)

Recently,... hmm don't really read much outside of class. It's hard to read for fun when you have to read for work.

Antigone is brilliant, though. It's old, it's sad and it's Greek, but it's totally worth reading. One of the best things I've read in ages.

Funny you should mention that. Oedipus Rex is still one of my favorites, and I have no idea why. It's just the height of irony.

i read that in school too, it's pretty intense hey. chinue achebe's hopes and impediment is a great read too. itshould be read following things fall apart as there are many references to the novel, but that aside, it's incredibly fascinating and a real eye-opener.

My fav book is "Sofia's World"(i can't remember the name of the author, i think he was from Hungary). It's mainly about philosophy's history, so you have to like that subject a bit, but there's a whole story behind that...it's great!

I like Tolkien's books too, though sometimes they're not easy to read.

I also enjoy reading little stories more than novels. Julio Cortázar is great, but i don't know if you'll find translations...

I can't think of anything else now (:idea2: harry potter!)

Well, I liked Lord of the Flies... I read it because I liked the title and I wasn't forced to read it.

Yes, Wuthering Heights ! the mood in that book is just amazing :nice:

Has anyone read The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera?

oops, sorry, i never remember it!

I've started to read "The illustrated Man", by Ray Bradbury, but i don't like it that much...I'll take your advices too

One very good book that everyone should read if possible, is Cash: the autobiography by Johnny Cash and Patrick Carr. Even if you aren't the biggest fan or anything, it's still worth reading. It is unspeakable great.

Goodness... I was a member of several of them (mainly TORn, TORc, and WaroftheRing.net among others) back before the movies came out and all the Orlando Bloom obsessed fangirls invaded. Even then stuck with them until RotK came out. I used to hang around in Barlimans alot and even went to the 'Gathering of the Fellowship' in Toronto for RotK's opening.

But I haven't really been on any of them in a long time. I started hanging around there when it was mainly well-read (usually male) geeks, so the bubble-headed fangirls taking over everything started to get to me after awhile and I decided to take a break.

" La Gloire De Mon Père " by " Marcel Pagnol " .. I love Marcel.

is the new harry potter book out yet :\

cos i've heard nothing about it on the news and in book stores (like usual) but the other day i was in some big department store and i saw it ???? and it was kinda down the back by it's self....so what's going on....

the same thing I would reply for favorite movie (because it's based on a book) :P

The Count of Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas

C.

I agree. Just i dont thinks it's very long,i read it in 2 weeks. And the book is much better than the movie(imo it's not that bad but it should have been divided into sequels).Everything written by Alexandre Dumas-pere is amazing and The Count of Monte Christo is his best novel. One can learn a lot about live from it.It's my fav book and The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien comes second:)
