*BSP-scored Man Of Aran released on DVD and CD on 4 May.

*Live performance at London’s British Film Institute on 23 April.

Whether you’re seeking a sweater, lots of puffins or a pre-war film re-soundtracked for 2009, the isles of Aran are the place to go. BSP can now confirm some details for their Man Of Aran jamwagon.

British Sea Power have written and recorded a new soundtrack for the 1934 quasi-documentary Man Of Aran. The film is being re-released on DVD with the new BSP soundtrack – a release which will be preceded by the band performing the soundtrack live to the film at the BFI on London’s South Bank on 23 April. The BSP Man Of Aran package includes two discs – the re-scored Man Of Aran on DVD, plus the soundtrack by itself on CD.

The BFI evening will also feature BSP playing live to some excerpts from the 2002 documentary Les Ailes De La Nature – plus a fully stocked beer bar and some disc-jockeys. Les Ailes De La Nature was directed by Jacques Cluzard, who co-directed the film Winged Migration. This BSP/birds spot at the BFI comes to you in association with Birdlife’s Born to Travel campaign. More information at: http://www.birdlife.org

Man Of Aran is a powerful and provocative dramatised documentary from the late American filmmaker Robert J Flaherty. In a series of startling black-and-white sequences the film presents daily life on the inhospitable Aran islands on the west coast of Ireland. The film was both celebrated and controversial on its release.

The film was created from half a million feet of film shot by Flaherty while living closely with the islanders. But Man Of A ran isn’t a straightforward documentary. The ‘family’ at the centre of the film weren’t related, rather a group of islanders cast as the family unit by Flaherty. The fishing expedition for basking sharks which forms the film’s dramatic heart was based around methods that hadn’t been employed on the Aran Islands for decades. Blending reality and staged elements, Flaherty arrived at a compelling document that captures the elemental power of the island’s past and present. The film won the Grand Prix at the 1935 Venice Film Festival and the eminent film critic Pauline Kael described it as, "The greatest film tribute to man's struggle against a hostile nature." British Sea Power first performed their Man Of Aran soundtrack at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2009.

British Sea Power announce new album details

'Valhalla Dancehall' will be released in January 2011

British Sea Power have announced details of their forthcoming new album, and you can see a video of the band talking about it below.

'Valhalla Dancehall' is the group's fifth studio effort and will be released in January 2011. It was produced by the group and Graham Sutton, who worked on the band's 'Do You Like Rock Music?' and 'Man Of Aran' albums.

Earlier this month the group released a new EP called 'Zeus'.

British Sea Power are set to play the Club NME New Year's Eve Ball at KOKO in London.
