Buying my first guitar? Acoustic? or Electric? Where do I start?

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

This is one for you guitarists out there.

I saw a sale of guitars in a catalog this weekend. I have never really played a guitar before, so i am a beginner. I saw one in the catalog, on sale, for $149, it includes: an electric guitar, amp and a DVD that teaches you. Should I go out and buy this one, or should i start out with an acoustic guitar. I'm really excited about learning and playing one. Another question is should i teach myself, or should i get professional lesson?

Cheers, Jared (yellowtalk)

It's sometimes good to start on acoustic because they are generally harder to play than electrics (I think). It depends if you want to play any acoustic stuff. I taught myself with a book and because I am a musician and violinist, I picked up the basics quickly. I think it's good to use books or DVDs so you can work at your own pace.

Most electric guitar starter packages feature a Squier Stratocaster which is what I started on (still have it) and a small 15 watt amp. These are good to start with. I don't know which you should buy though... If you get the electric guitar then you can learn from that DVD.

I would also buy an acoustic first, that's what I did, get the basics down learn how to play all the chords and progressions and then you can start to play tablature with an electric.
