One dead after 40-vehicle pile-up

One person has died and a number have been injured in a crash involving more than 30 cars in Kent, police say.

The accident, which took place at about 1625 BST on the A20, four miles outside Dover, is believed to have been caused by dense fog and rain.

Six fire crews, police and a Red Cross vehicle are currently at the scene.

The coast-bound carriageway of the A20 has been closed and drivers are being warned to avoid the Folkestone and Dover area.

Kent Police Assistant Chief Constable Allyn Thomas said he was surprised there were not more casualties given the "absolutely terrible" weather conditions.

"It's quite remarkable that more people weren't more seriously hurt," he said.

Among the vehicles in the accident were lorries, cars and a coach carrying children from a school in Poole, Dorset.

A Kent Police spokeswoman said no-one on the school coach was injured.

Police have advised drivers heading for the Eurotunnel to continue to use the M20.
