Hey everyone,

I don't think I've ever posted on this site before, but I have been a member for quite a bit. I was wondering if anyone out there has any music they came up with that was perhaps inspired by Coldplay or bands that have a similar sound? I made some songs inspired by Coldplay a year or so ago, and recorded them ... since then I've gotten better at singing (I hope) and recording in general, but I was wondering if you guys wanted to check out the two songs I wrote?

The two I am talking about are "My Heart" and "It's You." Just go to this link and they are at the bottom. I have some newer ones but I am just goofing around on those, but I am working on the newer ones currently. If anyone would like to collaborate or something that would be cool too.

Here's the link:

When you say "inspired by Coldplay", you really mean it. No offense or anything, and I I think you have done a great job, but "My Heart" sounds exactly like a mixture of the end of "White Shadows" and the intro to "Yellow" from Live 2003. Also, "It's You" seems like it got a huge influence for the B-side "For You". And also, "Start Over" sounds an awful lot like Keane.

Yes just want I thought. It was good, but I think maybe alittike more guitar in it.

"It's You" for me the intro sounded a lot like "Proof", but was pritty good.

I can see the White Shadows reference because I liked the sound of the organ when they used it, but I think the chords are a little different if I recall correctly. Either way I guess the influence really shows, although I've never heard of the 2003 intro to Yellow ... I actually wrote that intro around 2000 or 2002, and I just had nothing to put with it at the time so it sat at the backburner. I have the original on a cd somewhere where it's just that intro for "My Heart" and there's different background guitar on it, but it was so short due to no chorus that I couldn't finish it. Years later I was fooling around with it on my computer and sat down at the keyboard and just did this little thing.

What frightens me about the "For You" thing is I must've heard it subliminally or something when I was younger. I thought I was onto a good thing though, so I recorded it ... then I heard For You on YouTube and his melody has a similar sound, I nearly had a heart attack. But my melody keeps going and there's a chorus and such on my song. I was actually inspired by a Sarah Mclachlan song for that one.

As for "Proof," I haven't heard that song yet, probably because it's a B-Side and I haven't gone looking anywhere for it. But I'm glad the influence shined through. I have some other ones I'm working on, it's my singing I kinda shy away from.

Thanks for listening guys, finally I have some stuff that I can show everyone that has the same musical taste.

By the way, my new one has similar dynamics to "Swallowed in the Sea," but it's not the same. I just liked when the guitars and bass and everything kicked in at one point, just that kind of "feel" it gave. I wish I could mimic Jonny's guitar sound though ... that would make it sound a whole lot more authentic.

P.S. Anyone have some recordings they've done? I would like to collaborate with someone someday, or even start a band with a similar sound in the future. Ah, it's alright to dream, lol.

I know what you mean, several years ago I wrote a simple chorus of three chords that I liked, but I was never able to find a good place for it in any of my songs. I'm a big Radiohead fan, and when I heard one of Radiohead's unreleased songs, Videotape, I knew it sounded familiar. The majority of the song is based on three chords... the SAME chords I had used in my previous composition! They were in the exact same order and everything. Not only that, but my idea had been to use my delay pedal's reverse delay function to have some kind of reverse guitar part going, and at the end of Videotape, the piano and guitars are run through a similar effects pedal to make that sound. I'm not trying to take credit for writing such an amazing song like Videotape, but I was just shocked when I heard it and realised how similar it is to something I had written.

Anyway, this post got a bit long... sorry.

Also, my music is in my signature here, so you can check it out if you'd like to.

Well I hope my newer songs are a bit better and won't have any direct reference ... I will record them as soon as I can.

what? I didn't make a negative comment about your song sounding the same, I shared a similar story. Did you even read my post? (Maybe it was too long...)

Sorry about that, I quoted the wrong box on here. I'm not offended or anything about the songs anyways, if anyone listens to Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" they'll hear a similarity to "Speed of Sound." Coldplay even admitted it sounded similar during a concert, and they weren't shy about where their inspiration came from. But I do know what you mean Athalon, sometimes you'll find something sounds taken but you just gotta keep going. I listened to your stuff and I think it's cool.

i rather liked some if actually, the melodies are good and the (guitar?) not sure what you were using, in the backround for 'I would' was really good. Add some drums and another cool guitar riff and i think you've got it :). I was wondering though, what did you use to record??

I use a regular microphone that has the long stem-shape to it. I think it's called a goose-neck microphone, that plugs right into the computer. I use Cool Edit Pro to record as well. The song "I Would" is indeed a guitar, just with a few effects put on it. Some of the songs don't have drums because I wanted a more stripped down version of the song, kinda like "See You Soon" where it's mostly guitar and the voice. I'm doing another like that very shortly, just an acoustic and perhaps and organ. I only include drums when I want it to be a full-out song. I find that it sounds more intimate and close when it's really basic so it gets to the point of the song. Most of my other ones are a little goofy, just having fun on writing the songs, but I'm writing more serious ones at the moment and I'll be recording them shortly.

Thanks for the comments alecs37 :)

Here's my song, Logic, http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7KKD1VGW

You should be able to hear the similarities instantly with Clocks... However, I intend to make it more of an Embrace song once I'm finished with it.

Note- it is not complete, it is simply all on the piano with a few minor mistakes, the right hand plays the vocals... Sorry for the early version of it, but you'll be able to get the feel for the song even at this early stage, so tell me what you think!

This is really cool. You're really good at piano by the way. So, are you going to sing on this as well, or is it more of an instrumental thing you're going for? That was a real piano wasn't it? I thought I heard the metronome clicking away at the end ;) Nothing beats the sound of the real thing, it sounds so rich and it shows on this song. You could've had probably around 2 or 3 songs from that one alone, just because it branches off into other areas. It reminds me of something like Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen ... not the notes or anything but the whole "three songs in one" type deal. I like how you went back to the beginning piano riff at the end as well.

Thanks, yea it will have words in the end in this version the vocals are played in the right hand, and that was a metrenome on Garage band (I forgot to turn the volume off during the recording)... But is'nt it too much like Clocks to be any kind of oringinal material? I mean the begginning piano theme is almost identical to Clock's main theme... The second theme is harder to find in the song Clocks, however if you play the song backwords its taken from a theme in the beginning. Also the "And Nothing Else Compares" part in Clocks is recreated in my song.

Yeah there's definately some influence from Clocks on there. If you don't want that all you gotta do is not play the chord in an appreggio style. Basically whenever I make a song I have to practically never do an appreggio (the descending or ascending notes in a chord) or it'll sound very similar. Then again, I think it's because we are looking too hard into the songs ... when someone else hears our stuff they probably don't immediately think "oh, this is a b-side from Coldplay" because not everyone on earth listens to them. I think the difference between us though is that you in fact know that you put in references to Clocks. I wasn't aware of being so close to some of the songs by Coldplay according to that one guy. Heck, I never ever ever ever listened to that Yellow Live whatever year it was. I did see one on a dvd and he kept saying "Your skin" with a haunting melody and chords. I even played it by ear on guitar, and it's not remotely the same. As for "It's You," that was more or less written about my son. I can see the "For You" reference, but oddly enough I was more worried about a direct lift from a Garth Brooks song I heard in my early 20's on his Scarecrow album. Trust me, when Iplayed back the chords I was a little worried. But hey, we're amateur recorders and stuff. My life isn't under a microscope like Mr. Martin's is, so I'm not too worried about being famous and all that stuff. I just wanna write nice songs.
