Squier Pete
Does anyone know if you use an MXR micro amp to boost sustain because I'm using 5 pedals connected to my guitar and amp at the moment. Even if I'm using loads of distortion and compression the sound just trails off after hardly any time. I've read that the mxr micro amp is meant to reduce signal loss, if that's whats happening to my sound, should I get one of these?
McFadden
Did your guitar have a lack of sustain before? What kind of amp? Are you running the pedals straight into the amp or are you using an Effects loop? It is very annoying whenever sustain dies out prematurely. One of my little pet peeves on a guitar. frostbitepanda
I'm totally guitar ignorant and this might be totally useless, but I know that an E-Bow is good for sustaining guitar. I might be telling you something you already know, just thought I'd throw it out there.
bearcat1229
I have an MXR micro amp and yes....it does give you a quite gain boost if you need it. I don't know what kind of compressor you have but I have a Boss CS-3 and it works great you can dial in a large amount of sustain and control the volume on the pedal plus it also has an attack dial. I have 9 pedals in my chain directly into the amp and sustain is not a problem for me. Also the ProCo Rat is probably one of the best distoritions in my opinion its what Johnny uses. Squier Pete
Well my budget is pretty low at the moment so I use a 25 watt Fender Frontman amp (solid state) and I don't think that has an effects loop. My compressor is also Boss CS-3 at max sustain and I use a Squier Strat and Squier Tele Thinline. I'm considering getting an Epiphone Valve amp soon though. I came across something that was pretty interesting a while back ... and I guess in hindsight it's obvious to me now. Anyways, this guy said that the more distortion, the longer the sustain. Problem is, if you're going for a Jonny Buckland type sound or a totally clean sound or whatever. It all depends on the sound you're aiming for. If it's clean and you want a long sustain, you'll definitely have to invest in some nice gear, like a sustain or delay pedal.
Squier Pete
It's all to do with getting the right stuff in the end - good pickups, good amp, good fx. I'm just concentrating on getting a cheap valve/tube amp with an fx loop now.

Even though this stuff is expensive it'll pay off in the end.
wsosfr
you should get the guitar to a local tech to check for the pickups and, electronics, etc. BTW, how old are the strings, when was the last setup. Sometimes you can forget how much the usual maintenance improves your sound. Do that before you go to buy expensive effects. First be happy with the sound of your exsting gear. If your guitar sounds shitty, no distortion will improve it. (It will only hide it;))
improvisation
To be honest with you all you need to do is turn the sustain knob down on the CS-3... Its suprising how many people dont know that too much compression kills sustain. Also a Micro Amp has nothing to do with sustain. Its a booster. I also can tell you that you dont know what good sustain sounds like. I can help you get it if you want. Also take your amp and sell it or piss on it then throw it out the window. Thats what i would do with the thing. If you want a budget rig i can help you alot. Dosent matter the style, I can get you sounding like jonny or rockin like david gilmour. Give me a little more info about what you have and where you want to go with your sound and i can hook you up. Also STAY AWAY from Epiphone
