House-proud Brits will walk more than 22 miles every year - just by cleaning their home.

Vacuuming, dusting and sweeping the floor sees people walk an average of 683 metres - or almost half a mile - every week.

That's equivalent to walking round an Olympic running track 89 times, strolling round the perimeter of the London congestion charge zone or walking across the English Channel to France.

And just carrying out day-to-day chores means Brits are burning off a 50,261 calories a year.

Dr Gary O'Donovan, a lecturer in sport and exercise medicine at the University of Exeter, said: "Regular physical activity is important for health and wellbeing and there is evidence that short bouts of activity can be beneficial.

"To prevent weight gain, most adults need to expend around 400 calories per day in physical activity, which is equivalent to around two hours of dusting and cleaning or 82 minutes of vacuuming and mopping."

The study for Philips also revealed we will walk off a further 2,220 calories a year tidying up, cleaning the bathroom and sorting the laundry.

In all, that's the equivalent of 146 cheese burgers, 603 glasses of wine, 192 snickers bars, 369 cans of Coke or 394 packs of ready salted crisps.

To burn off the same number of calories would mean spending 57 hours of running at 8.5 miles an hour or cycling a 477 miles with 110 calories burned every 1 mile of cycling.

But some people do treat the cleaning as a form of exercise as 86 per cent of respondents reckon the household chores are a good way to keep fit.

Almost two thirds of the 3,000 Brits polled for the electrical giant said they clean more thoroughly to try and get some exercise.

Half of folk feel their muscles burning after a good clean and 94 per cent even say they work up a sweat doing the household jobs.

Almost 60 per cent reckon doing a proper clean of the house wears them out and a quarter make multiple trips up and down the stairs for a better workout.

And according to 35 per cent of people polled, vacuuming is the chore most enjoyed, followed by doing the laundry and washing up.

The poll also revealed that Brits will spend a two weeks a year - or just over six hours a week - cleaning and doing the household chores.

The most time-consuming chore is the washing and drying up of the daily dishes, which takes more two hours a week, followed by the laundry and ironing.

It was also found house proud Brits in the North-East clean more often than anywhere else in the UK.

Vivienne Palmer, from Philips said: "Cleaning the house can be a great way to get some exercise; it's surprising how many calories can be burned doing simple chores.

"So we have created vacuum cleaners that are as efficient as possible to make sure you not only burn those calories but get a clean home at the end of it too."

I hate to point out the fucking obvious but shouldnt all these bullshit bile copy and paste threads be either in the 'News and Sport' or 'Entertainment and Arts' section? Or has mc_squared finally been awarded his orange badge and we just, let it go?

No wonder the place is getting cheaper by the second, nobody gives a shit anymore. Slapping on a title in order to try and squirm and twist the meaning of the 'topic' (Or news item) to relate to us is complete crapola.

I declare a Crapathon.

Neither do the mods...

Too much detail to not be a personal thing, that

When did these schmucks think it was a great idea to complete waste their lives in this "study".

What a sad life. Filling our 'Newspapers' with utter crap - there's a lot going on in the world and they mislead us with this rubbish!!!

Their birth certificates are probably all apologies from the condom companies.

general question not necessarily directed specifically:

why post in a thread you don't like?

^Because people are mad feel they need to post post post! I don't know...

Because eventually they get too annoying to ignore anymore. That's right. Wanna know how to really piss me off? Talk about cleaning. Go ahead. I dare you. Throw in a survey while you're at it. Come on. Join in the fun. See how long it takes for my head to pop.

A thread here and there, fuck it who gives a damn, but 3 or 5 of these shitty pointless surveys every single day, clutters the place and pushes down threads that actually have opinions or are in some way even slightly inspiring to read.

Its just the same problem I had (and eventually, everyone else had) with the Games, so we made a subforum.

Obviously these threads arent even worth a subforum, as there are other forums to put it in.

Or we could just stop making them altogether.

Yeah, that last one works nice.

Or you could just disappear again. That would work better.
