Sorry for the long title,lol.

 

David's poll got me thinking about this. If oil becomes too expensive for must of us, and motorized transportation becomes something only the very rich can afford, could we survive? All of the goods and services we have come to depend on are shipped by planes, trains and trucks. Were we to lose that, could we continue to function? And how would we do it?

 

This isn't a question we have to answer in the near future...it's a question we have to start answering now. So, here's the thread for some intelligent discussion.

if oil increases it costs life will be difficult really, because the cost of other daily products will increase too. hope that if it happen we won't go back to several centuries.. and have to have (forced by the situation) our own farm/field to cultivate food and grow the animals that we will eat, and that our only mean of transport could be a donkey or mule... :uhoh:

 

anyways other ways of get energy is been investigated right now, i heard that Brazil run their cars with alcohol got from bushes or something like that. :thinking: and electric cars also... but i think it is more difficult that can be an efficient substitutive of oil for cars.

 

but the society has become today too technology dependent... specially young kids (all the day with the videogames and things like that, that give them have very important problems of communication and behaviour today); that increase won't only affect to "basic" things like cars i think... i guess that if oil will increase their cost, then toys and other technology machines will increaste it too. :thinking: because don't plastic come from oil/petrol too? and have a look around, we have plastic in everything :confused:

ahmmmm I don't think so but maybe the world would be a better place without using cars so much... I mean.. for short distances you can walk or use a bike... but still we need airplanes trains and all that stuff

Apocalype aside, it would probably be good for old forgotten out of the way port cities like Halifax, because people would probably find a way to revert back to old sailing ships for transportation.

 

But yeah, there probably would be massive food shortages all over the western world for years until more farms started up and cities found a practical way to survive. We'd probably all have to get used to having horses around again.

Currently the motor industry are working on the next generation of vehicles which won't use the thick black stuff to drive them, i.e. electric and hydrogen.

But yeah, the auto industry has been promising fuel cells for decades, but somehow never manages to make any progress on them... Granted, the part where the hydrogen potentially blows up a la the Hindenburg isn't so appealing, so they had better take their time to do it right. But still... I think it's a stalling tactic.

 

In the category of the way the world could have been, electric cars have been around for over a century- some of the very first experimental cars were electric.

1 - I live out in the countryside where at weekends you get people riding horses on the roads, less now that it's winter and cold.

2 - The first proper fuel-car goes on sale soon (by Honda)

1 Sounds like where some of my relatives live in Pennsylvania- Amish buggies everywhere. It was neat.

 

2 Well that's a relief, They've only been advertising that one coming soon for about 4 or 5 years, at least.

It's not neat when you travelling along at 60 mph only to see a horse and having to slow right down to less than 20 to give it a wide berth.

 

They have the technology for hydrogen fuel cells, it's just a matter of trying to make more re-fueling stations

no we definitely could not live without any form of motorized transportation, and without those things we would not be able to communicate as easily because people will be too lazy to go walk somewhere to get what they need. without our modern technology, our society will surely disintegrate.
