The ghost of Christmas past haunts the charts

This year's Christmas music charts could be packed with old hits thanks to new rules on downloads.

Favourites from Wham!, Wizzard and Andy Williams are expected to be in the Top 40 announced this weekend, according to mobile phone firm 3.

Although downloaded songs have counted towards chart sales since 2005, until earlier this year they included only those which were also available to buy in the shops.

The rules have been changed because so many people use online or mobile music libraries to download their favourite songs from the past and not only new singles.

This year's will be the first Christmas charts compiled under the rules.

According to music insiders, this Sunday's top 40 will include The Pogues' Fairytale of New York from 1988, Wham!'s Last Christmas (1986), Merry Christmas Everyone by Shakin' Stevens (1991) and Wizzard's I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day (1973).

There could also be an appearance from Andy Williams with The Most Wonderful Time of the Year (1963), thanks to its use in the current Marks & Spencer commercials.
