New 'gas mask' hoodies 'intimidating'

Street gear: Goggle jackets hide the face completely, leaving two plastic discs to see through

Anyone who feels intimidated by youths wearing hoodies should probably look away now - it's the goggle jacket.

The latest incarnation of the hooded top, called a goggle jacket, appears to have more in common with a gas mask than designer wear, leaving just small plastic discs for users to see through.

Basic goggle jackets cost £70, although others have been sold by Armani and Stone Island for up to £600.

Marc Chapman, store boss at Arrival menswear in South Shields, Tyneside, said he was struggling to cope with demand for the new hoodies.

'They're fantastic, cheap and they're selling really well,' he added.

'They look really unusual but lock in plenty of warmth in the winter.'

Others say the tops are intimidating – an image helped by the manufacturer, which packs them in a bag showing a yob hurling a missile.

Bob Harrison of South Shields said: 'I'd be pretty intimidated if I bumped into a gang wearing them.'

A Northumbria Police spokesman said the jackets were totally legal. 'A hat, scarf and glasses combination could obscure someone's identity so there are no powers to stop people wearing these jackets,' he added.

who would wear that?

At £70 a pop, every chav in the UK! (one night of crime will pay for that, as long as they can make do with a balaclava for a while)

:shocked2: If I ran into someone wearing one of those things, I'd promptly high tail it in the opposite direction.

Creepy, and downright UGLY! (And the white one makes me think of a KKK hood.) THere's nothing illegal about them, bu I'd still be alarmed by a bunch of kids wearing them. ANd they're going to appeal to the sort who want you to be alarmed.

Any face covering should be banned unless it's for a costume party or carnival, jobs where head protection is required, a sporting activity such as skiing, or because somebody's suffered burns or something like that. That would soon put a stop to them.;)

I wonder if GB is thinking of bringing in a "hoodie" tax??

what about veils then??

There is no place for total face covering in British society. It's completely unnecessary. Head scarves should be more than enough.

thats got nothing to do with the country they live in. if they wish to wear it for religious reasons they should have the freedom to do so.

I disagree. You have to abide by the laws of the country you live in, as that teacher discovered in Sudan after naming the teddy bear "Mohammed".

You have to have one rule for everyone, or else it's unfair. Everyone could come up with an excuse otherwise.

For example, somebody could say that as part of their "Star Trek" religion, they need to wear a Darth Vader mask. It's ridiculous.

There isn't a law about face covering at the moment, but perhaps there needs to be one in light of all the troubles, as people do find it intimidating and unnerving.;)

thats just an excuse for creating a law which discriminates an ethnic minority in britain.

No it isn't. You could argue that laws in other countries ordering "western" women to cover up, or not being able to name teddy bears "Mohammed" are just as discriminatory.

At the end of the day, you can't just have people doing whatever they like. Otherwise you would have total anarchy on the streets.

It has been said repeatedly there is nothing in the Koran to say women should completely cover their faces anyway. It's only the hair that needs to be concealed.

What you do in your own home is up to you (within reason), but you can't do whatever you like in public.

Some people like to walk around naked, but if you do so in public you'll get arrested because of the law. That's just how it is.

I am anything but a racist, but I have to ask myself why it is that when people come here, they can choose not to adapt to Canada's way of life, but if I refuse to adapt in many foreign countries, I could get executed.

I wouldn't worry so much about head coverings by muslims...it's things like female circumcision, which are practiced behind closed doors in most Western countries, that bother me. It's a bit off topic, but worthy of note.

As I said, you could come up with any excuse to bend rules (see my "Darth Vader" comment) if you wanted.

At the end of the day, you should abide by the laws of the land you're in, or suffer the consequences (even if a teddy bear is involved). Once you start making exceptions, you have to start making them for everyone.;)

I'm afraid I have to agree. In Ontario, we're debating openning faith-based schools for every bloody religion known to man. Can you imagine the cost to the taxpayer? The CAtholics have theirs, so now everybody wants one. MAuybe the Trekkie religion might just start out their morning prayers with the Mission Statement from the show's opening sequence while wearing their Darth masks, lol. Al jokes aside though, ti's a serious issue here. There has even been talk of introducing elements of Sheriah (sp?) law into our provincial laws for the Muslim populus. It's going too far, imo.

Get a pair of darken sunglasses and your face is covered for the prefect crime...

THat photo of Mark shows his face mostly covered...hmmmmmm....

That's OK - it was for skiing.:smug:

THat's what I said earlier...but it is one legitimate reason to cover your face. Skiing, bridal veils and Hallowe'en are the only good reasons I can think of though, lol.

When your working with chemicals is another reason.

Well, yeah. On-the-job safety. I'm sure there are actually a lot of good reasons, but I do see Mark's point about universal respect for a country's laws.
