Jodie Foster publicly acknowledges her lesbian partner for the first time

Actress Jodie Foster paid tribute to "my beautiful Cydney" - her lesbian partner of more than 15 years - in a thank you speech at an awards ceremony, finally confirming Hollywood's most open secret.

It is the first time the famously private star has ever made reference to her female partner or to her sexual orientation.

Couple: Jodie Foster's romance with Cydney Bernard was an open secret in Hollywood

 

She has long resisted calls from gay rights advocates to come out of the closet and become a proud role model.

 

The star is regularly seen out with film producer Cydney Bernard, and the couple have been raising Foster's two children Charles, 9, and Kit, 6.

 

She made the acknowledgment after receiving an award by the Hollywood Reporter at a Power 100 breakfast earlier this week.

She thanked "my beautiful Cydney who sticks with me through all the rotten and the bliss."

She is the latest Hollywood celebrity to come out this year, including Grey's Anatomy star TR Knight and Doogie Howser MD actor Neil Patrick Harris.

 

The acting veteran also spoke generally about her insecurities, saying: "I feel fragile ... unsure, struggling to figure it all out, trying to get there even though I'm not sure where there is."

 

She won Academy Award for her role as a rape victim in 1988's The Accused, and again three years later for her performance opposite Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs.

 

Foster, who is now also credited as a film producer and director, is now preparing to begin work on the drama Sugarland alongside Robert De Niro.

Ah, I didn't know she was gay.
