Eduardo suffers horrific leg break

Featured Replies

Eduardo Da Silva’s Euro 2008 dreams lie in tatters after he suffered a horrific leg break just four minutes into Arsenal’s clash with Birmingham.

The Croatian striker’s foot was planted as Martin Taylor dived into the challenge, resulting in a nasty injury that left several of Arsenal’s players visibly distressed.

Medical staff have taken Eduardo directly to hospital, where it is suspected he will need to undergo instant surgery.

Gunners physio Gary Lewin was one of a number of medical staff who were also left disturbed by the nature of the injury, which rules the striker out for the rest of the season.

Unfortunately that means Eduardo will also miss Euro 2008, after scoring 10 goals to lead Croatia into the tournament at England’s expense.

Birmingham defender Taylor saw red for the challenge.

Arsenal striker Eduardo suffers serious leg injury

LONDON, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva sustained a serious leg injury in the Premier League match against Birmingham City on Saturday.

The match was stopped for nearly eight minutes as the Brazilian-born Croatia international was treated on the field before finally being carried off on a stretcher.

Birmingham City defender Martin Taylor was given a straight red card for his challenge on Eduardo in the third minute.

Arsenal's players wandered around the pitch looking distraught and Sky television said they would not replay the incident because the pictures were too horrific.

Eduardo was taken straight to hospital and medical staff at the ground were also reported to be shocked at the seriousness of the injury. (reporting by Brian Homewood, Editing by Justin Palmer)

Martin Taylor (out of shot) is sent off as Eduardo receives treatment

Arsenal striker Eduardo suffered a broken leg in the third minute of their Premier League encounter against Birmingham at St Andrew's.

The Croatian went down after a challenge from Birmingham's Martin Taylor, who was shown a straight red card for serious foul play.

Eduardo, 24, remained on the pitch for seven minutes as medical staff attended to him before he was stretchered off.

He was put straight into an ambulance and taken to Selly Oak Hospital.

"Arsenal have confirmed that Eduardo has broken the lower part of his left leg and is now in hospital, where they will take a decision very shortly on whether to operate," said 5 Live's Ian Brown.

The seriousness of the injury was apparent as both sets of players and medical staff looked shocked while Eduardo was treated on the pitch.

Speaking on 5 Live, ex-Everton captain Kevin Ratcliffe said: "Looking at the players, especially (Cesc) Fabregas and Adebayor, realising the seriousness of the injury their heads went down immediately."

The Brazilian-born striker looks certain to miss out on Croatia's participation at Euro 2008 in June.

Eduardo injury among worst seen

Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva suffered an horrific injury in this afternoon’s Barclays Premier League match at Birmingham.

The Brazil-born Croatia star required more than eight minutes treatment for what looked to be a serious ankle injury before being carried off on a stretcher following a tackle from Martin Taylor.

The Blues captain was sent off for the challenge which came less than three minutes into the game at St Andrews.

Eduardo is not the first to sustain a sickening injury, and here PA Sport looks back at some others.

DAVID BUSST

The Coventry defender suffered a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula in a collision with Manchester United defender Denis Irwin during a match at Old Trafford in April 1996. The leg break was so bad that the bone pierced the skin and Busst’s blood had to be cleared from the pitch. He never played professionally again. United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, who witnessed the injury, required counselling afterwards.

LUC NILIS

The Belgian striker sustained a double fracture in his right leg as he raced towards goal while playing for Aston Villa against Ipswich in September 2000. He was forced to announce his retirement from the game the following January.

DJIBRIL CISSE

The Liverpool striker went down in agony under a challenge from Blackburn’s James McEveley in a match in October 2004. His left leg crumpled under him, fracturing his tibia and fibula. The prognosis was that he would miss the rest of the season, but incredibly he battled back to fitness, making his return in the Champions League quarter-final against Juventus last April.

HENRIK LARSSON

The Celtic striker suffered a double fracture of his left leg 11 minutes into the Hoops’ UEFA Cup clash with Lyon in October 1999. His manager at the time John Barnes insisted the injury looked worse than it was and revealed his displaced shinpad made it look as though his leg had been horribly broken. Larsson did indeed return to action and went on to become the club’s record goalscorer with 242.

ALF INGE HAALAND

The Norwegian was taken out by a knee-high assault by Roy Keane in a Manchester derby at Old Trafford in April 2001. He never completed another match for Manchester City and surgery never fully solved the problem with his knee and he announced his retirement in July 2003. Keane later revealed in his autobiography that it was premeditated revenge after he suffered a season-ending injury while trying to foul Haaland, then at Leeds, in a match in September 1997.

STAN COLLYMORE

The controversial striker was at Leicester when he broke his leg in an all-east midlands clash with Derby in April 2000. Collymore required six minutes of on-field treatment, including an oxygen mask, before being taken to hospital.

ALAN SMITH

Smith was playing for Manchester United in their FA Cup fifth round defeat at Liverpool when he broke his left leg and dislocated his ankle. Smith landed awkwardly as he blocked a John Arne Riise free-kick and was taken to hospital. He was out for seven months.

KIERON DYER

West Ham’s Dyer suffered by far the most serious injury of his career when he broke his right leg in two places following a tackle from Bristol Rovers’ Joe Jacobson just 10 minutes into August’s Carling Cup second-round tie at the Memorial Stadium. He has not played since.

Hope it doesn't end his career.

Wenger fury after Eduardo injury

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said Martin Taylor should "never play football again" after the Birmingham captain's tackle broke Eduardo's leg.

Eduardo went down after the challenge in the third minute of the Premier League encounter at St Andrew's and Taylor was shown a straight red card.

"The tackle was horrendous and this guy should never play football again," Wenger told BBC Sport.

"That kind of tackle was waiting to happen to one of our players."

He added: "I've seen some bad ones but they're not always punished with broken legs. You only need to kill one person one time. You cannot accept that on a football pitch.

"It was a massive shock for the team. Eduardo is a fantastic guy and for the players to see him in such pain and to see his leg in such a shape had an effect."

Eduardo, 24, remained on the pitch for seven minutes as medical staff attended to him before he was stretchered off and taken to Selly Oak Hospital.

Get well soon Eduardo.

What do you think, 3 month ban for Taylor?

I didn't get the game here. Did it look intentional or was it just a crap tackle?

Not to make light of the guy's injury, but I find it amazing that Wenger can see things on the pitch when he wants. I always thought he was blind during matches.

Dave, stop changing your name, you are confusing me. :P
