Coldplay's obsession with the number 42

Featured Replies

Hey guys, long time fan, new to the forum.

As mentioned by others, I think it is definitely a reference to Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy.

In the books the the cover of the guide has the words "Don't Panic" written on it.

Also, 42 is the answer to life, the universe, and everything.

The books are great for those who haven't read them, and usually when you se a reference to 42 it is a reference to the books.

the song might have something to life, the universe and everything, but I wouldn't be surprised if the title is just a reference to the books and has little to do with the song, similarly to don't panic.

This makes more sense since Viva La Vida is about life and death!

I agree on the comment that you can find endless things involving the band that have the 42 on it - Just like that movie Number 23 - rubbish by the way!

cheers!

Hey, it's just 6X7!:P

No, it's 6X9. Which is why we still don't know what the question is. :P (And if you actually get that joke...you win.)

But yes, 42 definitely comes from the Hitchhiker's Guide book(s), since they have other more subtle references like "Don't Panic" and the robot in the "Talk" video (which looks a lot like Marvin from the TV series). Though I've always found it kinda inconsistent that this band makes references to both religion/spiritualism and the most anti-religious book I know of.

Maybe Viva La Vida will define music of the 2000's like OK Computer from Radiohead did in the 1990's both make references to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy...

good point i made then haha

well saw that interview the other (would quote it but i cant find it...) and chris martin admitted that 42 is his favourite number...

it's become mine too..

I thought 21 may would be the release date of 42 or some other single. it would add up though :P 2 x 21 = 42:P

Hi, I'm kinda new here, but I found another "42":P:

In this video -

- (I guess it's known here), Chris sings "And I know that you'll be grumpy, that's what everyone sees, and you're not gonna hump me for 42 days!"

In Japanese, 4 (shi) and 2 (ni) are together pronounced like "going to death" (死に). Because of that, in Japan, 42 is considered as a disastrous number. This happens in Hong Kong too, as 42 sounds like "easy death" in Cantonese.

From Wikipedia's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/42_%28number%29

It seems to fit the lyrics, eh? :P

woahh. cool much?

charlotte charlotte charlottttte! :) wooo :D

Anyhow, back to 42. 420 nm is a good color! Ideal for growing coral reefs, photosynthesis - plants love it, and if an object absorbs 420 nm light, the color that often remains appears as Yellow, another hit!! :>
