June 8, 200818 yr 4) Clocks (Came 2nd in Coldplaying.com favourite songs poll) Possible future single and further evidence of Martin's obsession with death. Splendidly pompous piano hook that should have been played on a harpsichord for that full-on 'Rock Me Amadeus' effect. 'Clocks' is the third single from the Sophomore album 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head'. The video was directed by Dominic Leung at London Dockland’s Excel Building. The extras in the video were students from local colleges. Dominic has directed videos by Shawn Lee and Capitol K as well as Badly Drawn Boy under the name Hammer & Tongs with 2 fellow directors. http://youtube.com/watch?v=du6k1hJElqg The artwork' date=' as with the album and previous singles, is by Solve Sundsbo and the image is a portrayal of Chris Martin. The portrait has been taken from a perspective looking up from Chris's ribcage, through his shoulders with his face very foreshortened to the left of the image, but you can just see his nose and chin to the left of the picture.[/quote'] We were just about to hand the record in but it was sounding rubbish but we thought we had to do it because we wanted to release it then. Some of our record company guys came in and basically everyone decided that we had to put the record back to take the pressure off and Phil, our sort of figurehead or fifth member, said 'listen, you should record that song Clocks' cos I was saying that we should save this one which was a real mistake to make because I might be shot tomorrow. So, quite rightly, he said 'put that song on because it's good'. That song just arrived and I don't know where that came from! But I do know where the good bit came from! I was showing it to Jonny - and he picked up his guitar (a sure sign that he likes a song) and played these brilliant chords, and then Guy came in and added a bass line and then it sparked something else. It was like a chemical reaction process. That was mega and great fun. But we finished it and we thought 'that's got to go on'. I've read a lot of comments about this song and by everyone of them I say to myself that it isn't a good explaination, there's always something wrong. But I think that that's the explaination, everyone looks at the lyric and uses his or her own experiences to explain it. So everyone will have another feeling with this song, some people might be able to imagine what anyone else feels by this song, by a great empathy, but their own will always, although maybe only a little, different. I think that this song is about someone who is dying and can’t do anything to stop it. He sings about time passing by and the inevitability of that. He also speaks about Judgment Day. He is going to be judged and wants to do his whole life over again and wishes to get a new chance. Lights go out and I can't be saved Tides that I tried to swim against Have brought me down upon my knees Oh I beg, I beg and plead Singing Come out of things unsaid Shoot an apple off my head And a trouble that can't be named A tiger's waiting to be tamed Singing You are You are Confusion that never stops The closing walls and ticking clocks Gonna come back and take you home I could not stop, that you now know Singing come out upon my seas Curse missed opportunities Am I a part of the cure Or am I part of the disease Singing you are, you are You are, you are You are, you are You are, you are And nothing else compares And nothing else compares And nothing else compares And nothing else compares You are, you are Home, home where I wanted to go Home, home where I wanted to go Home, home where I wanted to go (you are) Home, home where I wanted to go (you are)

June 8, 200818 yr 3) The Scientist (Came 1st in Coldplaying.com favourite songs poll) Absolutely unquestionable 1st place. Probably, it is the best Coldplay song ever. and it is the fan favourite: beating the 2nd place by more than 2500 points and getting 59 mentions in 63 lists, obviously deserved. Congratulations to The Scientist! The Scientist' is the second single from the Sophomore album A Rush Of Blood To The Head. Arguably the best track from the monumental second record' date=' The Scientist was apparently too downbeat for Coldplay's burgeoning American fanbase - they got Clocks as a second single instead.[/quote'] "When me and Jonny (Buckland) went up to Liverpool on the train in November, and we were listening to what we had on the record (we had eight rough done) and we had the feeling that it was alright. And then I was sitting at this battered old piano that was completely out of tune and I'd just heard All Things Must Pass by George Harrison and heard this song called Isn't It Pity with this circular chord sequence. And this is all very anal but I felt I would like a chord sequence that went around and around, and where you don't know where it begins or ends. And this chord sequence just arrived and I thought it was really lovely. And then the whole song just came out and so we recorded it then and there, and the piano and vocal was from the day it was written. That's it! And the best moment of the entire record for me was when came back three weeks later when we came back to this song, I just heard through a wall this riff and that's what he does at the end, and that's my favourite bit on the record. That was a great moment because it was brilliant." "Nobody said it was easy. It's such a shame for us to part." Trouble with girls Christopher? Lilting balladry with a sing-song Martin vocal. Would have sat perfectly on Parachutes. For the video, Chris Martin had to learn the song backward. As he was walking forwards as normal, he was actually singing it backwards. So when the tape was played in reverse it looks as though Chris is singing it normally. http://youtube.com/watch?v=EcKQneIxOJI While Clocks, like much of the album, is a fine piece of music, it doesn't match this. The piano riff seeps into your consciousness like something from your Id, and before long you'll be itching to play it on any set of ivories you come across. The piano is wonderful, as is the way in which the band pull together for a rousing crescendo, but it's ultimately Chris Martin's emotive voice that makes this one of the year's standout singles. The second single off Coldplay's hit album, "A Rush Of Blood To The Head." "The Scientist" itself, is a piano, vocals driven quiet song with a lot of emotion wrapped inside it. Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry You don't know how lovely you are I had to find you, tell you I need you Tell you I set you apart Tell me your secrets, and ask me your questions Oh let's go back to the start Running in circles, coming up tails Heads on a science apart Nobody said it was easy Oh it's such a shame for us to part Nobody said it was easy No one ever said that it would be this hard Oh take me back to the start I was just guessing at numbers and figures Pulling the puzzles apart Questions of science, science and progress Do not speak as loud as my heart Tell me you love me, come back and haunt me Oh and I rush to the start Running in circles, chasing our tails Coming back as we are Nobody said it was easy Oh it's such a shame for us to part Nobody said it was easy No one ever said it would be so hard I'm going back to the start Oh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh (x4)
