There are weird effects played as on bass in Viva La Vida the song.

 

The part(higher cello tones) are played on bass between: 00:28 - 00:40

And between 00:41 - 00:55 and 00:56 - 01:02 and alot more.

 

So it is an more synth effect with a bit overdrive effect.. more like a cello.

Not a big bass player but from what I have seen of guys board it looks like a multi-effects board which probably has a setting just as you said, a synth/overdrive. boss makes a synth pedal for bas (our bass player has one but didnt like it) and im sure you already know alot of bass amp heads come with an overdrive/distortion selection. Well im sure that helped none what soever but oh well...

I have an overdrive pedal, good pedal.. but can't get the good sounds from that, do you have a picture of Guy's board?

Some of the NBC videos for the today show swing by a really good view of both Jonnys and Guys setups. Guy deffinately uses individual pedals now.

I probably know what it is.

I think he use soundfonts for it, cello/violin soundfonts.

 

I found a soundfont that sounds very close to this.. so maybe he use that one to?
