Johnny's Reverb and Delay sound

Featured Replies

i was wandering how he pulls off that deep reverb sound that seems to ring on forver like on the beginning of lovers in japan on the new cd or stuff like that, is he using the line 6 dl4 with what reverb setting? I have a dl4 and a line 6 reverb pedal and was trying to create a similar sound

Welcome to the forum!

Jonny actually obtains that sound by using reverb (any kind should be fine) and picking really fast to make a constant sound. Watch this performance and at 1:33 you'll see where he starts to make that sound by picking fast:

Hope I helped.:)

Jonny's good at tremolo picking, but it definitely seems like he's getting more sustain on lost! and lovers in japan (like at the end where it rings on forever) by just strumming it once and letting it ring. I'm not an expert on pedals though, so I can't help you out there.

Someone noted earlier that Jonny is now using a Space Echo as well. Jonny also uses a Micro amp which can add increased gain. >gain>volume>sustain time. The DL 4 can do wonders ( I love mine) but if he is using it, it's almost impossible to recreate unless its one of the factory settings. I think hes using his loop function on it quite a bit now from what I can tell.

I've also noticed that The Rat Distortion pedal creates an amazing amount of sustain by itself. He is using a new distortion pedal but still has the Rat as far as I know. Just play around with things you can never reproduce a sound exact but you can find something that will be satisfactory without too much problem. Also work on you technique (attack, tremolo picking, sweep picking, etc.) These will all help.

Could someone please post a few videos of just going through a whole heap of short riff's from Jon, because I'd like to hear the different tones from the guitarists on this board! It would be cool if you also show us your gear in your videos...ill post mine soon. cheers in advanced! Oh and if anyone can show me how to use a Line 6 Delay Pedal as well as an Ebow for Jonny's parts that would great!

I don't know what i should purchase first, the ebow or the DL4

The way he uses the MXR micro amp in conjunction with his reverb pedal has a fair bit to do with it. Instead of using the mxr as a signal boost, if you turn up the gain (or whatever they call the function-can't remember at the moment.) while using an valve amp, you can drive the amp into a slight form of natural overdrive (what a typical distortion pedal is designed to model). This in turn alters how said amp responds to other effects in the signal chain. Judging by the setlists w/ effects notations available online, Jon uses this a fair bit when he is also using reverb. (though these setlists are all from old tours and do not include the new songs)

As for the space echo, it's only rumored that he's using one (for now.) I think it is used in a few of the new songs but am not sure. Also, the few photos that exist showing his new pedal setup (none of them good) show a box about the right size/configuration for the twin pedal version of the space echo next to his effects switcher.

thanks for all the posts. i was thinking he was using the auto volume echo on the dl4 with some reverb. Posting vids of us playing and our gear would be awesome too. :D

He averages about 3-4 effects per song, so with that kind of layering, it's often hard to pick out individual effects/settings...:\
