who writes music and lyrics

Featured Replies

Is there a list anywhere of who wrote lyrics and music to all of Coldplay songs. Sorry if this has been asked before.

Thanks

according to the music books, all songs were written completely by all 4 members. But I think Chris probably writes most if not all the lyrics.

Yeah, Nick's right, Chris writes all of the lyrics,

the music is written by ideas that all 4 guys have, they show each other and elaborate on that.

They describe it as a factory. Although songs ideas have come from all members of the band, Chris will generally lead the process by coming up with some chords and a melody, from their they brainstorm and jonny, will, and guy add there accompaniment. The best example of this, i think, is "what if" where Chris writes a song on piano, gives it to the other guys who add their instruments and voila. a new coldplay song.

Now, the music would tend to get pretty dry if that was the case with every song, "square one" was the result of will and jonny jamming in the studio. And I expect songs like daylight came from jonny folling around with the slide and so on... Chris will also shake things up by playing around with guitar tunings and styles.

But to answer your question, Chris writes 95% of the lyrics, and all the piano/rythm guitar parts. The other guys will sometimes help out lyrically...the famous opening line of yellow "Look at the stars, look how they shine for you.." is supposedly Guy Berryman's invention.

I was really interested to hear that Guy helped mould the main drum beat for In My Place - I think Will said that they'd originally been messing around with a drum machine and they tried to recreate it live but couldn't get it right. But then Guy somehow managed to get it sounding how they wanted it to sound...??? Is that right or am I talking nonsense again?!
