Two new countries on the map of the world

The Russian president has said the country has formally recognised the breakaway Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent.

Dmitry Medvedev announced that he had signed decrees in a televised address.

The move follows a vote in both houses of Russian parliament on Monday, calling on him to recognise the regions' status.

It comes despite criticism from US President George W Bush over Russia's decision.

"I have signed decrees on the recognition by the Russian Federation of the independence of South Ossetia and the independence of Abkhazia," Mr Medvedev said in the announcement.

Analysts say the move is likely to further escalate tensions between Russia and the West.

Earlier on Tuesday, Russia cancelled a visit by Nato's secretary general, one of a series of measures to suspend co-operation with the military alliance.

Russia's ambassador to Nato said the trip would be delayed until relations between the two were clarified.

Dmitry Rogozin said a "new understanding" needed to be reached between Russia and Nato.

hahha yeah right!

How conveniently they announced independence of our regions. Maybe 300,000 refugees from Abkhazia have right to vote, have they not?

And they're already talking about contracts beetween russia and those regions... well there are no two new countries on the map... It is a new map of Russia.

congrats!

tams if you understand in russian, you can read my lj, I'm not happy after these news :(

Coldplanty..well shit happens...

You're concerned about Market and rates...while we here are loosing our country :(

And come on..since when Russia is concerned what the west will say, they always go their own way.

Whatever disagreement might be between us, still i'm glad that you do not like this news, whatever the reason might be.

p.s Loosing.....is the spelling right? :D

while we here are loosing our country :(

sorry, I cant do anything

we try our lives away, then stumble into the grave :(

well, this step was kinda obvious after the last 2 weeks. or after Putin's speech earlier this year: if Kosovo is allowed to be independent then Abkhazia and South Ossetia r too. :\

it's just sad that the West is too coward to do anything.

I was thinking about it, im still anti-Russian government but those to regions deserve the right to freedom and if we did recognize other regions like that around the world, we should them as well.

You might not know but we here have 300,000 abhkazian refugees, while 70,000 are living there at the moment, abhkazians i mean. I think this people have right to vote ..wether they want to be apart of Georgia or not.

And the real old name of so called south Ossetia is Samachablo actually...that has been the part of Georgia for centuries. Ossetians sattled down there around 150 years ago.

I don't know anymore who deserves what and not so. But i know that Russia did not help a bit :( and 1989 was not a good start either.

coldplanty ..true true..

Georgia has been struggling for 21 centuries, so i guess this country can take no more. :(

A vote would be a good idea to see if they should stay a part of Georgia or become their own nation.

what about Tibet, Taiwan, Catalonia, the Crimea, what if California or Alaska would become independent? Northern korea or China can recognise new country of California. I dont find it funny:thinking:

California and Alaska do not want to be their own nation.....

would be funny though, I'd like to see kansas try to succeed, wouldn't last long :P.

So do you think Kosovo should be its own nation?

No, because its a part of Serbia.

California and Alaska do not want to be their own nation.....

What if? Just imagine.

No, because its a part of Serbia.

What if? Just imagine.

So then you're against south Ossetia being a nation then?

Anyone who supports Kosovo being independent and not South Ossetia is a hypocrite, and vise versa with supporting South Ossetia and not Kosovo.

The same logics applies, if you consider Kosovo to be part of Serbia, then South Ossetia is part of Georgia.
