Shoppers injured at opening of new Lidl superstore as hundreds rush to bag a bargain

By Daily Mail Reporter Last updated at 3:33 PM on 18th September 2008

Hundreds of shoppers clashed as they rushed to secure a bargain at the opening of a supermarket today.

Several customers suffered minor injuries in the scuffles as crowds swarmed to the Lidl store, witnesses said.

Security guards closed the main doors of the shop in Southall, Surrey, after stands were knocked down in the stampede.

Huge queues then developed outside the store which opened at 8am with special offers including discounted TVs.

A Lidl spokesman said: 'It has been a very, very, busy store opening.

'Our security staff have had to close the doors from time to time to limit the numbers of people inside the store. I have no knowledge of fighting.'

A police officer has been posted to the area after the stampede. A Met spokesman said: 'We are aware there have been crowds of excited people there.'

Lidl and fellow budget supermarket Aldi have enjoyed massive growth in recent months as consumers struggle with soaring food prices.

Aldi posted 20.8 per cent growth in sales this month, while Lidl grew by 11.1 per cent in the 12 weeks up to September 7.

The two firms have been putting Tesco, Britain's biggest retailer, under huge pressure as shoppers turn to cheaper alternatives.

German-owned Aldi is opening new stores in the UK at the rate of one a week.

Both firms no-frills approach allows them to keep down prices.

Really? I spotted Aldi and Lidl in Prague, but I had no clue they also try to crack the market in England. :laugh3:

I think Aldi isn't that bad. We often buy foods there at least once a week. The quality is great and prices are very low. The increased cost of heating a house and running a car at a time of high oil prices force people to save money elsewhere I believe.

When I was in my school band, the teacher bought us all a load of biscuits and drinks for the last practice, and she so obviously went to Lidl, because all the biscuits were German. haha!

LOL I didn't know that! :D Which instrument did you play?

Well you know what they say - every Lidl helps!!

Last year someone changed the first letter at my local Lidl-market... then the sign showed "Pidl", another word for... well... a weenie! Haha. I had to laugh so hard! The same happened with "Schlecker" where someone add two letters so the shop was called "Arschlecker" (english: a***licker). :laugh3:

Do you also have Schlecker in GB? :sneaky:

Maybe someone should do the same with Burger King, replacing the first "r" with a "g"!!
