An examination board came under fire last night after it emerged a Gary Glitter song was being recommended in schools.

The Assessment and Qualification Alliance, the largest body of its kind in Britain, encourages listening to the paedophile's pop hit 'I'm The Leader Of The Gang' on a reading list aimed at children studying for GCSE music.

A brief sent to students on November 1 lists the song as one of nine 'Suggestions for related listening.'

Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, and his number one song appear alongside a GCSE musical assignment tasking children with composing a song that relies 'changes of tempo and/or style of its effect.'

AQA's decision to advocate the shamed glam rocker as a prime example of popular song since 1960 has drawn scorn from parents and child abuse campaigners.

Critics insist the move is insensitive and that schools should not advocate vulnerable pupils taking an interest in the paedophiles work.

It is feared boys and girls between the ages of 15 and 16 will actively search for details of the singers career online and be confronted by details of the two girls he molested in Vietnam.

All musical coursework must be handed in by May so AQA can carry out marking.

A spokesman for AQA quoted in the Sun newspaper defended the choice as a 'really good' example of a popular hit.

Dr Michele Elliot, director of children's charity Kidscape called for a recall of the papers.

She said: "AQA need to get Glitter off there. It sends totally the wrong message to paedophiles victims.

'Thousands of children will take this exam. If they buy his song it could be a nice little earner for him.'

Her calls were echoed by anti-child abuse campaigners Shy Keenan and Sara Payne branded the decision 'disgusting.'

In a statement they said: 'This stonking great child molester should crawl back under the rock he came from, not to be celebrated for his music.

'We'll campaign to have any reference of him taken out.'

Other songs on the list include Freddie and the Dreamers 'It’s great / Gabardine Mac', Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Gloria Gaynor's 'I Will Survive and Dexy’s Midnight Runners 'Come on Eileen'.
