Black Rose
It depends on your budget, but if you have a bottomless pit get this beast: Canon EOS 5D Mark II 21 million pixies, HD recording for videos etc. All yours for just over £2000, so it kinda fails on your "not that expensive" part
SueDeNimes
Hi! Just three days ago I bought this:  Canon PowerShot SX200 IS http://www.dpreview.com in general might be a good site for you to find out more!! It has 12,1 mega pixels, pics are 4000x3000 px, videos are in HD (1280x720 px). I resized the following pics. ;) This is a picture taken without zoom: This is taken from the same spot with the 12x zoom: And this is a TINY part of the 100% view: You can see the number on the light bulb!!! :stunned: I'll take this camera to the Kings of Leon concert next week, after that I can tell you more. But it's not really expensive, has amazing features for an amateur like me and it is a compact camera!! You can see some short videos taken with some cameras in a group test here. I took some short videos with it myself and I'm really happy with how they turned out.

strawberryfields
It really depends on how much you're willing to spend. But definitely go with Canon! The 5D Mark II is an excellent choice (I wish I had it :(), but yes, it can be very expensive when you include all the accessories.

Sleep
Canon PowerShot SX200 IS Want. Can I record and zoom with this camera? Or will it make the picture fuzzy/blurry?
SueDeNimes
Canon PowerShot SX200 IS Want. Can I record and zoom with this camera? Or will it make the picture fuzzy/blurry? You can film when you have zoomed in, means you can put the maximum zoom for example and then film. While filming however there's no option to change the zoom. While filming only the digital zoom works... But I didn't care as zooming in and out during filming looks bad most of the time... If you want a compact camera that can do this, you have to choose the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 (DMC-TZ7) which was in that group test as well (the one I postd the link to). But I didn't want that one as it has only the "AUTO" modus for taking pictures, the Canon (my pretty little baby :D) gives you possibilites to adjust the settings as well. That was my reason to go for the Canon, and it has nice little extra features as well like giving you a bigger preview of the pic that is selected when you look at your list, changes the way of looking at the pic when you turn the camera etc... Like I said - after Thursday (the concert) I can tell you more!
Makayla
If you don't want an actual SLR camera, but want something similar. Get the Coolpix Nikon P90. I just got one and it is incredible. 24X optical zoom. Great camera. Quality pictures.

ryank808
I recently got the Sony Cybershot H20. You can record 720p HD videos (with zoom!).
