I would never use it to actually describe someone with mental problems and I'm sure Paul wouldn't either, but that's not the issue at all.

 

Calling something gay is completely different, gay does not mean anything other than homosexual, so implying that it means bad would be to change it's meaning, that is not what has happened here so it's not the same thing, so don't compare the 2.
